The questions below come from YouTube comments, Reddit threads, app-store reviews and Quora threads we read in October 2026, plus what students ask us. The sample is small: 62 YouTube comments on LanguageCert videos, mostly praise, and a handful of Reddit threads. Wording is lightly edited for clarity.
Key facts
- LanguageCert's own October 2024 concordance report says Academic "appears to be more demanding" than IELTS Academic in Listening and Reading.
- Every Listening recording is played twice (LanguageCert, read October 2026).
- Speaking is a live interview of about 14 minutes with a human interlocutor, in person or on screen.
- Australia's Department of Home Affairs lists LanguageCert Academic for tests taken on or after 7 August 2025.
- Each skill is scored 0 to 100 and the overall is the average. CEFR cut-scores: 40-59 B1, 60-74 B2, 75-89 C1, 90-100 C2.
- Testing time is about 154 minutes. Results come within five working days.
Is LanguageCert Academic easier than IELTS?
Nobody can answer that for you. LanguageCert's own October 2024 concordance report says Academic appears to be more demanding than IELTS Academic in Listening and Reading. Prep-company blogs call it easier. Difficulty is personal and depends on format. Choose the test whose format suits how you perform, then check which one your visa or university accepts.
Why the answers disagree:
- The report looked at 1,008 people who sat both tests. It says the extra difficulty is in the tasks, not the text.
- Its reading passages are easier prose: grade 10.3 readability against 12.6 for IELTS in the report's content analysis.
- Prep sites often sell on "easier". Their claim is not evidence.
Format differences you can check yourself:
- Listening is played twice.
- You book two parts: Listening, Reading and Writing (LRW), then Speaking. Take them on the same day or within 14 days.
- Speaking is a live interview, not a recording.
- There is no negative marking anywhere in the exam.
What students say: one YouTube commenter wrote only, "PTE vs this - which is easier?" Nobody replied. On Reddit, a test taker on r/IELTS wrote about the speaking section:
the exam procedure is more difficult for students, but is marked more easily
A test taker on r/SpouseVisaUk called it "way better than IELTS" for the UK dependent visa, with "4 parts and it's very straightforward". An r/ukvisa thread says LanguageCert tends to have much better availability in Europe than IELTS. These are personal views. Experiences on Reddit are mixed, so read them as opinion, not evidence.
For the full comparison, read LanguageCert Academic vs IELTS. If PTE is also on your list, see LanguageCert vs PTE.
Is the listening really played twice?
Yes. Every recording is played twice, and the repeat is built into the audio. In Parts 1 and 2 each conversation repeats on its own. In Parts 3 and 4 the whole part replays after a short pause. There is no pause button and no replay beyond that second play.
What to do with that:
- Use the first play for the main idea. Use the second play for details.
- Part 3 gives you 30 seconds to read the note pad. Part 4 gives you one minute to read its six questions.
- Part 3 is the only part where you type. Each gap takes up to three words.
- The rest is three-option multiple choice.
The section has four parts, 30 questions and about 40 minutes. A computer marks it.
Practise without pausing. That is the biggest realism upgrade you can make. See LanguageCert Listening for each part, or try Listening Part 1 practice questions.
Is the speaking test with a real person or a computer?
A real person. LanguageCert Academic Speaking is a live interview with a human interlocutor, in person or on screen, and every test is recorded. The interlocutor marks two criteria during the interview. A second examiner marks the other criteria from the recording. It takes about 14 minutes.
The four parts:
- Interview questions, about 3 minutes.
- Role-plays, about 2 minutes.
- Read aloud and follow-ups, about 4 minutes. You get 20 seconds to look at the passage first.
- Presentation, about 5 minutes. You get 1 minute to prepare, and notes are allowed.
There are five marking criteria, each scored 0 to 8. Task Fulfilment and Communicative Effect count double. The interlocutor awards those two during the test.
This is different from PTE, where an AI scoring system marks your speaking. Here you talk to a person.
See LanguageCert Speaking, then practise with Speaking Part 1 questions and Part 3 questions.
Is it accepted for Australian PR and skilled visas?
Yes, for tests taken on or after 7 August 2025. Australia's Department of Home Affairs lists LanguageCert Academic. The test must be taken at a secure testing centre. Score requirements are set per English level, not per exam. Your visa subclass decides which English level you need.
Details from our Australian visa guide:
- On the Competent English page, Home Affairs sets minimums per component: 57 for Listening, 60 for Reading, 64 for Writing and 70 for Speaking.
- Every component must clear its own floor. A high average does not cover one weak skill.
- An online-proctored sitting does not satisfy Home Affairs.
- A test taken before 7 August 2025 does not count.
A few commenters asked whether LanguageCert earns points or sits on the list. Our pages do not map LanguageCert scores to points. Check your subclass and the points table on the Home Affairs site.
What Reddit adds, as reports and not facts:
- A thread on r/pte, two days old when we read it, asked whether anyone has tried LanguageCert or CELPIP for Australian migration. We have no verified answer from it. Use the Home Affairs facts above.
- A test taker on r/StudyInTheNetherlands wrote that they passed C1 at LanguageCert, but that "most universities only accept IELTS or TOEFL". That is one report about one country. Universities set their own lists, so ask admissions which tests it accepts before you book. Another Reddit poster asked, "Is LanguageCert really only accepted by like 3 universities in the Netherlands?" We saw no answer and cannot confirm any number.

How do I know I'm booking the real LanguageCert and not a look-alike site?
The official site is languagecert.org, and UK visa tests are booked on its SELT site, selt.languagecert.org. The GOV.UK approved SELT list names the approved LanguageCert products, so compare what you book against it. After the test, keep your score report and your SELT unique reference number. If a link looks different, stop and check before you pay.
Why people ask: a r/ukvisa thread asked whether a link containing "languagecertcelt" was a scam. A look-alike address is a fair thing to worry about when a visa deadline is close.
What to check
- Type the address yourself, or reach it from the GOV.UK guidance. Do not rely on a link in a message or an ad.
- For a visa, you need a SELT. A standard sitting of the same exam is not on the GOV.UK list and does not satisfy UKVI.
- The LanguageCert SELT products on the GOV.UK list are Academic SELT, General SELT and International ESOL SELT.
- GOV.UK says your application may be refused if you leave out your SELT unique reference number. Keep it with your score report.
- If anything on the page does not match the GOV.UK list, stop before you enter payment details.
We do not know of other checks beyond these. Read LanguageCert for UK visas for the approved products and booking steps.
Which SELT level do I need for a UK visa, and is it speaking and listening only?
It depends on your route, so check GOV.UK. A first partner visa needs A1, and the extension after 2.5 years needs A2 in speaking and listening. LANGUAGECERT International ESOL SELT is a speaking and listening test at A1 to B1. LanguageCert Academic SELT tests all four skills at B1 to C2. Skilled Worker needs B2 in all four skills.
Both kinds exist. The two-skill test is the interview format that r/SpouseVisaUk posters describe at A1, A2 and B1. The four-skill Academic SELT is a different product.
What our UK pages say
- Settlement needs speaking and listening at B1 for applications made before 26 March 2027, and B2 for those made on or after that date, unless an exemption applies.
- The two-skill products on the GOV.UK lists are not listed above B1.
- LanguageCert states SELT results in three to five working days.
- GOV.UK says results are valid for two years from the date the test is awarded.
What test takers report
- A r/SpouseVisaUk post said the A1, A2 and B1 test is a short one-to-one interview, with results "usually available within 7 days". That is longer than LanguageCert's stated three to five working days.
- Another poster wrote:
I did the test last Thursday and got the results this morning so it took less than 2 working days
This is one person's timing, in a reply on r/ukvisa. Do not plan a visa deadline around it. Use the official figure.
- A r/SpouseVisaUk poster said there is no SELT for B2 speaking and listening only. Our UK work and family visa guide lists no two-skill product above B1, which agrees with that.
More reports from r/ukvisa and r/SpouseVisaUk. Each is one poster or one thread, and we cannot verify any of them:
- ILR in March 2027. A 61-comment r/SpouseVisaUk thread from March 2026 says the settlement (ILR) rule moves to B2 in speaking and listening only. It says the change was announced on 5 March 2026 and applies from 26 March 2027. That is the thread's reading of the Home Office statement of changes. Our UK work and family visa guide gives the same dates, but read the rule on GOV.UK before you book. One commenter there said they could not find a B2 test that is not four parts.
- Providers outside the UK. A commenter listed four: LanguageCert, Pearson, PSI Skills for English and the IELTS SELT Consortium. Our UK work and family visa guide agrees for tests taken outside the UK. Trinity is UK only. Check the approved list on GOV.UK, because it changes.
- Fees. One poster reported paying £175 for a B1 booking in January 2024. Another wrote that a Writing mark was one short of a pass, that appealing cost £100, and that a marking error was accepted and the fee refunded after about six months. That is a single account. Use LanguageCert's SELT site for the current fee and appeal rules.
- Which site to book on. A r/ukvisa commenter asked whether a B1 booking link on a second web address was real or a scam. Our UK visa guide links LanguageCert's SELT site at selt.languagecert.org. We cannot verify any other address, so reach the booking through a link from languagecert.org or from GOV.UK.
- Speaking format. A r/SpouseVisaUk poster in February 2026 described the A1 dependent-visa speaking test as "an audio call, not a video call" with a live examiner. We have not verified how the two-skill test is delivered. For LanguageCert Academic, LanguageCert's published format is a live interview with a human interlocutor, in person or on screen, and every test is recorded. See LanguageCert Speaking.

Can nurses use it for registration or a work visa?
Not for registration, on the evidence we have. Ahpra in Australia lists five tests and LanguageCert is not one of them. The NMC in the UK accepts only IELTS Academic and OET. New Zealand's council lists OET and IELTS Academic. Visa rules are separate. Check your regulator's own list first.
What our nursing registration guide says:
- Ahpra accepts Cambridge C1 Advanced or C2 Proficiency, IELTS Academic, OET, PTE Academic and TOEFL iBT.
- The NMC says IELTS Academic and OET are "the only tests we can accept".
- A test on a visa list does not automatically count for registration.
- Passing a registration test does not satisfy a visa requirement on its own, or the reverse.
One commenter asked whether nurses can use LanguageCert for a work visa. That depends on your route. LanguageCert Academic is a UKVI-approved Secure English Language Test, but a UK work visa has its own rules.
Start with English tests for nurse registration. For the visa side, see UK work and family visa English tests.
Can I retake just one section?
Our pages do not list a single-section retake for LanguageCert Academic, so check LanguageCert's current policy before you book. What we can state is the repeat policy: no minimum wait between your first three attempts. After a third sitting you cannot retake within 90 days of the latest attempt.
What we do and do not know:
- Our retakes guide lists IELTS and the Michigan English Test as publishing single-skill options. It does not list LanguageCert.
- Booking Speaking separately from LRW is a booking choice, not a retake.
- If you plan fast resits, the 90-day limit after three attempts matters.
One commenter asked this question. Do not rely on a prep site's answer. Read English test validity, retakes and results, then confirm with LanguageCert.
What IELTS band does my LanguageCert score equal?
At overall level, LanguageCert's concordance study maps 61 to 66 to IELTS 6.0, 67 to 72 to 6.5, 73 to 80 to 7.0, 81 to 87 to 7.5 and 88 to 94 to 8.0. It covers 1,008 people who sat both tests. The report says the scores are not interchangeable. Your institution decides what it accepts.
| LanguageCert overall | IELTS band |
|---|---|
| 61-66 | 6.0 |
| 67-72 | 6.5 |
| 73-80 | 7.0 |
| 81-87 | 7.5 |
| 88-94 | 8.0 |
Source: LanguageCert concordance study, October 2024. Overall correlation .87.
Why to be careful:
- The top rows rest on few people. IELTS 6.0 rests on 225 students. IELTS 8.5 rests on 3.
- Nobody in the study scored IELTS 9.0, so there is no equivalent. A chart that shows one invented it.
- Per-skill conversion is weaker. Correlation is .76 for Reading and .71 for Writing, Listening and Speaking.
- LanguageCert does not publish a raw-mark-to-score table. One commenter shared 24/30 in Listening and 23/30 in Reading and asked what score that gives. No public table can answer it exactly.
See the full table with sample sizes at LanguageCert to IELTS equivalent.
Is there a practice app for it like the PTE apps?
Yes. ScoreFluent has LanguageCert Academic practice for all 15 task types across speaking, writing, reading and listening. Speaking and writing attempts get Personalised Tips, paid with credits. Reading and listening practice is scored free, within a daily limit. A full mock test is also available, so you can rehearse the whole exam.
One commenter asked for "a practice app like APEuni". Other apps exist and we have not tested them here. When you compare any app, check:
- Does it play Listening twice, with the real reading pauses?
- Does it use the 0 to 8 marking criteria for Writing and Speaking?
- Does it say its scores are estimates?
