Michigan English Test

How MET is scored.

Four sections, each reported 0–80, averaged into one overall score with a CEFR level from A2 to C1. Listening and Reading are scored by computer; Writing and Speaking are rated by certified raters against published 0–4 criteria. There is no pass or fail.

The 0–80 scale

One scale, the same CEFR cuts everywhere.

Every section score and the overall score sit on the same 0–80 scale, and the overall is a plain average of the four sections, so each skill carries equal weight. The CEFR cuts are the same for every section.

MET scoreCEFR levelLabel
64–80C1Advanced and higher
53–63B2High intermediate
40–52B1Intermediate
27–39A2High beginner
0–26Below A2—

Because the overall is an average, one weak section pulls the whole result down. If a receiving body sets section minimums as well as an overall, aim at the boundary in every section, not at a high average. The MET format guide has the published IELTS concordance for overall scores.

There is no negative marking in Listening or Reading. Michigan reports typically getting your score report to you within five days of the test date.

Writing and Speaking

The rating scales, criterion by criterion.

Writing — five criteria, each 0–4

Grammatical Accuracy, Vocabulary, Mechanics (sentence boundaries, punctuation, spelling), Cohesion and Organization, and Task Completion. Task Completion covers relevance to the task, the degree of supporting detail, and whether the task was actually finished. Mechanics is rated apart from grammar.

Speaking — three criteria, each 0–4

Task Completion (relevance, quantity of language, ability to elaborate), Language Resources (vocabulary range and appropriacy, grammatical accuracy and complexity), and Intelligibility / Delivery (fluency, hesitation, pronunciation, rhythm).

Where to see the scales with examples

Michigan’s Writing and Speaking Resource Packs set out the rating scales, and the Writing pack includes sample responses. Reading them is the most direct way to see what a given rating looks like.

How ratings become 0–80 is not published

The criteria are public, but Michigan does not publish the conversion from ratings, or from raw Listening and Reading performance, to operational 0–80 scores. Treat any practice score as an estimate, ours included.

Reading your score

What counts as a good score.

MET has no pass mark, so a good score is defined by whoever receives your report. Institutions publish the exams they accept and the minimum scores they require, and some specify section minimums as well as an overall. Get those numbers first, read them against the table above, and work backwards to the sections you need to practise.

If a section comes up short, Michigan’s options differ by section: a single-section retake exists for Writing, Listening or Reading (ordered within three days of your results, and only if the receiving body accepts it), and Writing and Speaking can be sent for a rescore.

FAQ

MET scoring questions, answered.

How is the Michigan English Test scored?

Each of the four sections is reported on a 0–80 scale, and the overall score is the average of the four section scores. There is no pass or fail. Your report shows the CEFR level for the overall score and for each section.

What CEFR level does my MET score correspond to?

MET spans A2 to C1, and the same cuts apply to every section: 27–39 is A2, 40–52 is B1, 53–63 is B2 and 64–80 is C1. Scores from 0 to 26 fall below A2.

Are Listening and Reading marked by a person?

No. Both are multiple choice with one correct answer and are scored by computer. Each correct answer adds to the section score and nothing is subtracted for a wrong one, so there is no reason to leave a question blank.

How are MET Writing and Speaking rated?

By trained, certified raters using Michigan’s published rating scales. Writing has five criteria: Grammatical Accuracy, Vocabulary, Mechanics, Cohesion and Organization, and Task Completion. Speaking has three: Task Completion, Language Resources, and Intelligibility / Delivery. Each criterion is rated on a 0–4 scale.

Can I convert my raw Listening or Reading score into a 0–80 score?

Not exactly. Michigan does not publish a raw-to-scaled table, and the forms differ from one test taker to the next, so a raw percentage is only a rough guide. Any tool that claims to convert a raw count to an exact MET score is approximating, including ScoreFluent.

Can I ask for my Writing or Speaking to be rescored?

Yes. Writing and Speaking can be sent for a rescore, which a different set of raters carries out. It costs a fee, can be requested for a section only once, and the rescore decision is final. Listening and Reading are computer-scored and cannot be rescored. Check the handbook for the current rules before you rely on it.

What MET score do I need?

There is no pass mark, so the answer comes from whoever receives your report: a university, a board or a visa programme. Ask for the required overall and section scores before you book, then work backwards to what you need to practise.

Does ScoreFluent give MET scores?
