Reading and Use of English need different kinds of control
Reading asks you to follow ideas across extended texts. Use of English also probes how precisely you can manipulate words and structures: collocations, word formation, missing grammatical words and transformations that preserve meaning.
Separate comprehension mistakes from language-form mistakes in your review. If you understood a passage but chose the wrong word form, rereading more passages alone is unlikely to address that particular error. Build a short correction log with the original sentence, the corrected form and an explanation in your own words.
Prepare to write and speak for a purpose
Extended writing
Practise planning two developed responses within the paper’s time. Before drafting, identify the reader, purpose and required points. Leave time to check whether the register remains consistent.
Individual speaking
Use the prompt to organise a clear response. Develop relevant comparisons and reasons instead of listing disconnected observations or reciting a memorised opening.
Collaborative speaking
Practise responding to another person’s idea, asking for their view and moving towards a decision. Giving a polished monologue is not the same skill as sustaining a discussion.
Understand the score report
Your Statement of Results reports Reading, Use of English, Writing, Listening and Speaking on the Cambridge English Scale, alongside an overall result and CEFR level. Keep that detailed profile when checking an institution’s requirement. See Cambridge’s candidate guide →
A qualification name and an admissions or visa threshold answer different questions. For an Australian application, use the required listening, reading, writing and speaking minimums rather than assume that any result labelled C1 meets the rule.
Choosing C1 Advanced for Australia
Check your visa subclass, the date of the test and the recognised delivery mode before choosing it. Home Affairs’ English-level tables can set different minimums for each skill. Our Australian visa comparison → links the current rules and compares all listed tests.
Use the IELTS guide → to compare Academic and General Training, or the MET guide → for another four-skill format. Make the choice from your required result and sample-task experience, not the apparent size of the score number.
Questions before you book
Is C1 Advanced the same as CAE?
C1 Advanced is the Cambridge English qualification formerly known as Cambridge English: Advanced or CAE. It is a specific qualification, not a general name for every Cambridge English exam.
How long is Cambridge C1 Advanced?
Reading and Use of English takes 90 minutes, Writing 90 minutes, Listening about 40 minutes, and Speaking about 15 minutes for a pair. Check the centre’s schedule because the speaking appointment may be arranged separately.
What is Use of English?
It tests vocabulary and grammatical control through tasks including cloze exercises, word formation and key-word transformations. It is part of the Reading and Use of English paper, but has its own reported score.
Is C1 Advanced accepted for Australian visas?
Home Affairs lists C1 Advanced among approved tests, but acceptance and required component scores must be checked for your visa and test date. The overall Cambridge grade alone does not demonstrate that every visa threshold has been met.
