Start with the tests your organisation accepts. Then compare the conditions that can change how well you show your English: live or recorded speaking, task pace, source synthesis, practical writing and sustained reading.
This guide does not identify an “easiest” exam. It uses official format facts and your self-reported strengths to build a provisional shortlist. Your receiving organisation’s current rules take precedence.
Answer 15 questions. The first two cover your purpose and the tests you have confirmed are accepted. The remaining questions ask about concrete tasks. Choose “Not sure” if you have not tried a task.
Your answers stay in this page. Nothing is submitted, saved or linked to an account.
This table separates delivery conditions, task demands and score reporting. Timings are approximate because some official sections use ranges or differ by delivery mode.
| Exam | Delivery | Approximate test time | Distinctive tasks | How results are reported |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| PTE Academic | Computer; recorded speaking | About 2 hr; official sections use time ranges | Rapid responses, repetition, summaries, visual description | 10–90 overall and four skill scores; task-specific traits |
| TOEFL iBT (2026) | Computer; recorded speaking; adaptive Reading and Listening | About 2 hr including directions | Daily-life and academic comprehension, sentence building, email, repetition, interview | Four 1–6 section bands and overall mean |
| LanguageCert Academic | Computer; live one-to-one speaking | About 154 min | Role play, read aloud, visual presentation, academic writing | Four 0–100 skill scores and equally weighted overall |
| CELPIP-General | Computer; recorded speaking | Under 3 hr | Everyday communication, email, survey response, scenario speaking | Four component levels from 1–12 and overall average |
| Cambridge C1 Advanced | Paper or digital; usually paired speaking | About 3 hr 55 min | Dense reading and language use, two extended texts, peer collaboration | Cambridge English Scale skill scores and overall |
| IELTS Academic | Computer; live examiner speaking; local delivery options vary | About 2 hr 45 min | Long academic texts, visual-information writing, essay, interview | Four 0–9 skill bands and overall band |
| IELTS General Training | Computer; live examiner speaking; local delivery options vary | About 2 hr 45 min | Practical and workplace reading, letter, essay, interview | Four 0–9 skill bands and overall band |
| Michigan English Test (MET) | Computer; recorded speaking | 155 min | Grammar, linked texts, progressive writing, increasingly complex speaking | Four 0–80 section scores and overall average |
Different scales are not interchangeable. A lower-looking number does not mean an easier exam, and a shared CEFR label does not create direct score equivalence.
The branches organise your research. They do not prove that one speaking format or task family will produce a higher score.

Apply your accepted list first. Many skills are shared, so keep more than one format when the evidence is tied.
IELTS and LanguageCert require you to respond as an interaction develops. LanguageCert includes role play and candidate initiation. Cambridge adds collaboration with another candidate.
PTE, TOEFL, CELPIP and MET use recorded speaking. These formats differ: PTE and TOEFL include repetition, while CELPIP and MET move through scenario or opinion tasks.
IELTS General Training and CELPIP include practical correspondence. TOEFL includes a concise email. The academic profiles place different weight on essays, summaries or visual information.
Cambridge makes grammar, collocation and word formation unusually explicit. MET includes contextual grammar. IELTS Academic and Cambridge require sustained work across long texts.
IELTS and CELPIP operational listening is single-play. MET presents main listening inputs once, although an item may replay a short segment. LanguageCert and Cambridge play recordings twice. TOEFL Listening uses staged adaptive modules in the 2026 format.
Typing, headset familiarity and rapid navigation can affect how well you show your English. Treat these as delivery conditions to practise, rather than English weaknesses.
No exam is universally easiest. Eligibility comes first. Then compare your performance on official samples under the real speaking, writing, listening and timing conditions.
No. It is a self-reflection tool for exploring formats. It does not test English ability, predict an official score or establish that you will perform better on one exam.
Use the result as a list of formats to explore, then check the current rules of the authority, institution, employer or professional regulator receiving your result before booking.
They share Listening and Speaking, but their Reading and Writing tasks differ. Academic includes visual-information writing; General Training includes a practical letter.

ScoreFluent reviewed current publisher format pages, handbooks, scoring guides and official preparation material on 26 September 2026. Official facts describe the exams. The five equally weighted focus areas used by the chooser are ScoreFluent editorial format guidance, not official skill weights or a validated aptitude model.
ScoreFluent is independent of the exam providers. Recheck the provider and receiving organisation before booking, because formats and recognition rules can change.
