Read →Format and content are only part of the choice. These are the practical differences that decide timelines, retakes and how long a result lasts — each figure sourced to the publisher that reports it.
Eight exams, eight rows: how fast results arrive, where you sit the test, who marks it, what a retake involves and how long the result lasts. Every cell links to the publisher page it was read from.

Publisher facts, checked 27 September 2026. Fees are set per country — check each publisher's fee page. Where a result “does not expire”, the organisation you apply to may still require a recent result.
Three of these eight results do not expire on paper: LanguageCert Academic has no expiry date, a Cambridge C1 Advanced certificate does not expire, and Michigan English Test results do not expire either. That is not the same as universal acceptance — all three publishers say the institution, employer or visa authority receiving your result can still set its own acceptance window, and most do. PTE Academic and TOEFL iBT are both valid for 2 years from the test date. IELTS publishes a 2-year window too, but frames it as a recommendation to receiving organisations rather than an expiry it enforces itself. CELPIP-General results are valid for 5 years from when the score report is issued, again subject to whatever window the receiving body sets.
Two of the eight let you retake one skill instead of the whole test. IELTS offers a One Skill Retake within 60 days of a computer-delivered test, once per test, for one section. The Michigan English Test lets you retake one section — Writing, Listening or Reading, but not Speaking — ordered within 3 days of receiving results. Every other exam here requires a full resit: PTE Academic allows up to 12 attempts in 12 months, TOEFL iBT limits you to one sitting per 3-day period, CELPIP-General to one session per 5 calendar days, Cambridge C1 Advanced to one attempt per exam administration, and LanguageCert Academic to unlimited online attempts with no wait after a first or second try, then a 90-day wait after a third.
Results turnaround ranges from about 2 days (PTE Academic, and IELTS delivered by computer) to 5–10 working days (Cambridge C1 Advanced, delivered digitally) or 4–6 weeks on paper. If you are working to a fixed deadline — an application round, a visa lodgement date — turnaround matters as much as which test you sit, since a fast result can be the difference between meeting a cut-off and missing it. Book with margin for the slower delivery modes: paper-based IELTS takes 13 days (7 in India), and TOEFL iBT's Paper Edition takes 11–13 business days.
IELTS publishes a 2-year validity window, but frames it as a recommendation to receiving organisations rather than an expiry IELTS enforces itself. Confirm the window your specific institution, employer or visa authority currently applies.
IELTS (One Skill Retake, within 60 days of a computer-delivered test, once per test) and the Michigan English Test (one section — Writing, Listening or Reading, not Speaking — ordered within 3 days of results). The other six profiles here require a full resit.
Among the eight, PTE Academic and computer-delivered IELTS report the fastest published turnaround — PTE typically within 2 days, IELTS usually in 1–2 days. CELPIP-General follows at 2–4 business days. These are typical windows, not guarantees, so confirm current timing on the publisher’s site.
No. A Cambridge C1 Advanced certificate does not expire, but the organisation recognising it — a university, employer or visa authority — sets its own acceptance window, so check that window directly rather than assuming indefinite acceptance.
