CELPIP-General: format, scoring and preparation
Advice, emails, conversations and decisions: CELPIP-General tests how you use English in practical situations. Start with the four-skill test your destination actually accepts.

What is in CELPIP-General?
The four-skill test has a practical focus. General LS is a separate, two-skill test; check the full name on your booking.
| Section | Time | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Listening | 46–55 minutes | Conversations, information, news, discussion and viewpoints |
| Reading | 43–56 minutes | Correspondence, applying a diagram, information and viewpoints |
| Writing | 53 minutes | An email and a response to survey questions |
| Speaking | 15 minutes | Eight tasks covering advice, experience, scenes, predictions, persuasion, difficult situations and opinions |
Some listening and reading items are unscored development questions. You cannot identify them during the test, so answer every item. See the official format →
How CELPIP scoring works
Your report gives a level for each skill. CELPIP levels are linked to Canadian Language Benchmarks, but the receiving organisation decides what you need. Keep the four targets separate instead of treating an average as sufficient.
Writing raters consider content and coherence, vocabulary, readability and task fulfilment. Speaking uses content and coherence, vocabulary, listenability and task fulfilment. Relevance and appropriate tone matter alongside language accuracy. Read the performance standards →
A useful self-check is whether your answer does everything the situation asks. If an email requests an explanation and a proposed solution, polished sentences about only the explanation leave the task incomplete.
Prepare for the task, not just the topic
Writing
Practise identifying the recipient, purpose and requested points before drafting. Give each point space, then check tone, paragraph order and sentence accuracy.
Speaking
Record an answer to a practical scenario. Listen back for a clear position, relevant reasons and a completed response. Avoid filling the time with an introduction that could fit any question.
Reading and listening
After each sample, identify the exact words or inference supporting the answer. For diagrams, practise moving between a visual and the written situation without ignoring constraints.
CELPIP for an Australian visa
The exam name is only the first check. Confirm the required English level, every section minimum, test date and delivery mode with Home Affairs. Its accepted-test list requires a secure test centre.
Our Australian visa comparison → puts CELPIP alongside IELTS, PTE, MET and the other listed tests. For the format differences, read the IELTS guide → and MET guide →
Questions before you book
What is the difference between CELPIP-General and General LS?
CELPIP-General tests listening, reading, writing and speaking. General LS tests listening and speaking only. Home Affairs names CELPIP General in its accepted-test list; do not substitute General LS.
Is CELPIP-General accepted for Australian visas?
Home Affairs includes CELPIP General for tests taken on or after 7 August 2025 at a secure test centre. The required result and evidence period depend on the visa. A Canadian CLB target is not automatically the target for an Australian application.
Does CELPIP have an essay?
The writing section uses an email and a response to survey questions. You still need to organise and support ideas, but preparation should follow those task instructions rather than assume an academic essay format.
Is CELPIP easier than IELTS?
There is no universal answer. Compare your actual required section results and try the official sample tasks. Practical communication, recorded speaking and different reading formats can suit different candidates.
