ScoreFluentHow PTE Academic is actually scored.
PTE does not apply one rubric to every answer — each task type is scored on its own named traits, with its own weighting or points scale. Once you know which traits a task is scored on, you know exactly where to spend your effort. Here is the breakdown task by task, plus a full look at how Read Aloud specifically is marked.
Content, Pronunciation, Fluency — in different mixes.
Every Speaking task blends the same handful of traits, but never in the same proportions twice. Describe Image and Re-tell Lecture also route their Content score into a human reviewer, specifically to catch memorised templates.

Points, not percentages — and one zero-rule.
Both Writing tasks are scored on a fixed points scale rather than a percentage weighting, and Summarize Written Text carries a rule that can zero the whole task on its own.

Per-answer marks, and where negative marking bites.
These item types are marked per correct answer rather than by weighted trait — but two of them subtract marks for a wrong selection, which changes how confidently you should guess.

Read Aloud is scored on Pronunciation (40%), Oral Fluency (35%) and Completeness (25%) — and Completeness is the trait candidates most often lose without noticing.
Always finish the passage
Completeness is 25% of the score, and it is scored on whether you finished — not on how well. Stopping halfway because you stumbled on a word loses those marks permanently; keep reading instead of restarting.
Fluency rewards pace, not perfection
Oral Fluency measures pace and smoothness, not accuracy. A natural, slightly imperfect delivery scores higher than a slow, over-careful one full of unnatural pauses. Use the 30–40 seconds of prep time to scan for difficult words and plan how to handle them before the microphone opens.
Do not re-read a mispronounced word
The scoring does not track errors backwards — it moves on as you do. The costly pattern is stopping at a hard word, going silent for several seconds, then re-starting: the pause damages Fluency more than the mispronunciation would have.

What does PTE Academic actually score on each task?
Each task type is scored on its own named traits, not one generic rubric. Speaking tasks combine Content, Pronunciation and Oral Fluency (or Completeness) in published weightings; Writing tasks are scored on a fixed points scale across Content, Form, Grammar, Vocabulary and Spelling; Reading and Listening item types are scored per correct answer, with negative marking on several of them.
Does PTE use negative marking?
On several item types, yes — Re-order Paragraphs does not, but Reading Multiple Choice Multiple Answer and Listening Highlight Incorrect Words both subtract a point for every incorrect selection, down to a floor of zero. Only select an option you are confident about on those tasks.
What is the Zero-Rule on Summarize Written Text?
If your Content score on Summarize Written Text is 0, the entire task scores 0 regardless of your Form, Grammar, Vocabulary or Spelling marks. It is the single highest-leverage trait on that task for exactly this reason.
Is Describe Image scored by AI alone?
Mostly, but not entirely. Pearson uses a human expert to review the Content score on Describe Image and Re-tell Lecture specifically, because memorised template responses were widespread enough that AI-only scoring under-penalised them.
How is Read Aloud scored?
Read Aloud is scored on Pronunciation (40%), Oral Fluency (35%) and Completeness (25%). Completeness is why finishing the passage matters more than getting every word right — stopping partway through a passage loses those marks permanently, with no way to recover them by restarting.
