For higher education, begin with the institution’s admissions rule. For migration, read the visa rule. If you need one result for both purposes, confirm that both organisations accept the same test version.

Four sections, four separate results

IELTS lists 2 hours 45 minutes overall. Listening takes about 30 minutes, Reading 60 minutes and Writing 60 minutes. Speaking lasts 11–14 minutes and includes familiar questions, an individual long turn and a further discussion. Check the official format →

Use a full official sample to understand how the sections feel under time pressure. A reading answer that is correct after ten minutes may reveal a timing problem when the complete paper must be finished in an hour.

What the IELTS band score measures

The overall band averages the four skill scores and follows IELTS rounding rules. The scale runs from 0 to 9, with whole and half bands reported. An overall band is a summary, not permission to ignore a section minimum.

Writing is assessed for task achievement or response, coherence and cohesion, lexical resource, and grammatical range and accuracy. Task 2 carries more weight than Task 1. When reviewing an essay, separate the argument from the language. Did it answer the actual question? Is the position clear? Do the examples support that position? Then inspect vocabulary and grammar. Correcting isolated sentences cannot repair an unanswered question.

Choose the right material

Use samples for your version. Academic visual descriptions and General Training letters need different practice, even though both require clear, accurate writing.

Practise developed answers

For speaking, support an opinion with a reason and a relevant example. Record a long turn and check whether the listener can follow the sequence without seeing your notes.

Track section targets

Write your required result beside each skill. Spend more review time on the section preventing you from meeting the requirement, rather than repeatedly practising your strongest skill.

IELTS for Australian visas

Home Affairs lists both Academic and General Training. The test-centre requirement, visa-specific evidence rules and any One Skill Retake eligibility still apply. Read the Australian visa English-test comparison → before booking.

Questions before you book

Should I take IELTS Academic or General Training?

Ask the organisation receiving the result. Academic is used for higher education and professional registration. General Training serves migration and some training or below-degree study purposes. Australian visa acceptance alone does not establish which version your university or professional regulator needs.

Are IELTS Academic and General Training speaking tests different?

The Listening and Speaking tests are shared. Reading and Writing differ between Academic and General Training.

How long is IELTS?

IELTS lists a total test time of 2 hours 45 minutes. Listening is about 30 minutes, Reading and Writing are 60 minutes each, and Speaking is 11–14 minutes. Confirm your appointment schedule with your test centre.

Can a high IELTS overall band cover a low section score?

Not when the receiving organisation requires a minimum in each section. Read both the overall requirement and the individual listening, reading, writing and speaking requirements.
