The 2026 TOEFL Writing section has three tasks and many questions about how they are scored. The questions below come from r/ToeflAdvice threads we read in October 2026; wording lightly edited for clarity. Where Reddit makes a claim about scoring, we say it is unverified.
Key facts
- Writing has 3 task types, 12 items and 23 minutes. 10 items are key-scored (Build a Sentence) and 2 are AI-scored (ETS 2026 specification, as summarised on our TOEFL Writing guide).
- Write an Email has a 7-minute limit. Write for an Academic Discussion has a 10-minute limit and needs at least 100 words.
- Each section is reported as a 1 to 6 band. Overall is the mean of the four section bands, rounded to the nearest half band.
- Writing reliability is 0.87, with a standard error of about 0.36 band (ETS Technical Manual RR-25-12).
- ETS has not published how the three Writing tasks are weighted.
How much does Build a Sentence count towards the Writing band?
ETS has not published how the three tasks are weighted inside the Writing band, and our pages do not state a weighting. Reddit posters disagree: one says Email and Discussion count more, another says Build a Sentence matters much more. Treat both as unverified. What is published: Build a Sentence has 10 key-scored items, and the Email and Discussion are each scored 0 to 5.
What we can say
- Build a Sentence is key-scored: an exact match against an ordered answer, with no AI involved.
- The Email and Discussion are labelled AI scored in ETS's 2026 specification.
- Practise all three. You cannot tell which one costs you most without feedback on each.
See the TOEFL Writing guide for each task, and how the new TOEFL is scored.
Is 16 out of 20 really only a 4.0?
We cannot confirm that. The 16 out of 20 figure is community arithmetic: 10 for Build a Sentence plus 3 and 3 for the two written tasks. ETS has not published how task scores combine into the Writing band, and we found no conversion table for it. Do not plan a retake around a total someone worked out on Reddit.
Why the sum is shaky
- Build a Sentence is scored per item. The Email and Discussion are scored 0 to 5 against marking criteria. These are different kinds of score.
- Our scoring page says there is no public raw-to-band table for Reading and Listening, and ScoreFluent does not invent one. We found none for Writing either.
What to do
- Treat a score someone calculated for you as a guess.
- If your Writing band looks wrong, look at each task separately before you look at the total.
Why are 2026 Writing scores lower than people expected?
Some test takers on r/ToeflAdvice report Writing stuck at 4.5 or below after scoring higher on the old test. We cannot say whether scores are lower on average, because ETS has not published that. ETS's reliability data gives Writing a measurement error of about 0.36 band, so a half-band gap between two sittings can be noise.
Students who used to easily score 25 or 26 on the old [test]… writing is stuck at 4.5 or below
A test taker on r/ToeflAdvice, in a thread asking if recent Writing scores are unusually low.
What may be going on
- The format changed. Writing dropped every integrated task in 2026 and now has Build a Sentence, the email and the discussion.
- The scale changed. Writing is now a 1 to 6 band, not a 0 to 30 score.
- Each task has its own rule. The email must cover three goals. The discussion needs at least 100 words.
Do not read a single sitting as a trend. For the band and measurement details, see how the new TOEFL is scored.
Are Writing templates safe in the 2026 test?
Our pages give no rule on templates, and we found no ETS statement on them. Reddit is split: one test taker uses a template only to structure the Academic Discussion, while another thread warns against templates. Write an Email must cover three goals set by the scenario, so a fixed script can miss one. Use a loose shape you can adapt, not memorised sentences.
What to do
- Keep a short shape, not full sentences. For the discussion: your view, one reason, one example, a reply to a post.
- Never write the same opening for every prompt. The email scenario changes.
- Read the three email goals before you write anything. Answer those, not a script.
- This is our suggestion, not ETS advice.
For the PTE version of this question, see do PTE templates still work.
How should I split my time across the three tasks?
ETS publishes 7 minutes for Write an Email and 10 minutes for Write for an Academic Discussion, inside the 23-minute Writing section. Our pages list no separate time for Build a Sentence. One r/ToeflAdvice test taker reported spending 7, 10 and 4 minutes. That is a single report. Practise with the published limits so the real clock feels familiar.
What to do
- Time the email at 7 minutes and the discussion at 10 in every practice session.
- Build a Sentence is mechanical. Do not let it eat the time the two written tasks need.
- Build a Sentence is free to practise every day on ScoreFluent, so drill it on its own.
- Use the last minute of each written task to check for errors.
See the TOEFL Writing guide for the section facts, and the TOEFL practice test to run the whole exam in order.
How do I structure the email so every bullet is covered?
Write an Email gives a scenario and a graphic with three sub-goals, so cover all three. Use one short paragraph for each goal, in an informal to semi-formal tone. ETS scores the email 0 to 5, and it is the only Writing task that carries a Social Conventions dimension. The paragraph-per-goal shape is a test taker's tip, not an ETS template.
For the email, aggressively address every bullet point, one paragraph for each
A test taker on r/ToeflAdvice.
What to do
- Count the goals first. There are three.
- Open with a short greeting and the reason you are writing.
- Give each goal its own paragraph and answer it in the first sentence.
- Close politely in one line. Social Conventions covers tone and manner.
- ETS publishes no word count for the email. It asks you to write as much as you can, in complete sentences.
How long should the academic discussion reply be?
ETS states that an effective response contains at least 100 words. The limit is 10 minutes and the task is scored 0 to 5. One r/ToeflAdvice poster advised four to five error-free sentences in basic English. That is a single tip and it may fall short of 100 words, so count your words in practice. Respond to the posts, then add your own view.
What the task asks
- A professor's post frames the topic. Two student posts give different views. You add your own.
- The register is formal and academic.
- Clear and correct beats long and risky, but stay above 100 words.
What to do
- Write a version, count the words, and learn how long 100 words looks on screen.
- State your view first. Add one reason and one example.
- Refer to one of the student posts by what it said.
Is a Writing rescore worth it?
Our pages do not describe a TOEFL score review process, so check ETS for the current rules, fees and deadlines before you pay. One r/ToeflAdvice poster reported that a review raised one section by a full band and the overall score by 0.5. That is one report, not a typical result. Overall is the mean of the four section bands.
My score in this section increased to 5.5 (+1), which also raised my overall score by 0.5
A test taker on r/ToeflAdvice, in a thread about a March 2026 score review.
How to think about it
- Overall is the mean of the four section bands, rounded to the nearest half band. One section moving by a full band does not always move the overall by 0.5.
- Writing has a measurement error of about 0.36 band (ETS Technical Manual). A rescore can land either side of that.
- Ask first whether the gap to your target is one Writing band or several. A review cannot close a large gap.
- MyBest reports your best band in each section across the last two years. Acceptance is not universal, so ask your institution.
Do universities still see a 0–30 Writing score?
Not as a per-section score, on our pages. Our score-conversion page says the legacy 0 to 120 figure is overall only and is shown until January 2028. Section results are 1 to 6 bands. One Reddit post says Writing is no longer reported on a 1 to 30 scale. Ask your university which band it accepts for Writing.
My university requires at least 4.5 in every section
A test taker on r/ToeflAdvice, worried that one weak section could sink an otherwise strong overall.
What to do
- Ask the university or board for its Writing requirement in bands, in writing if you can.
- Check whether the requirement is overall, per section, or both. A per-section floor can be the binding rule.
- For the overall mapping ETS publishes, see the score conversion table.
- For the rest of the 2026 format, read the questions students ask about the new TOEFL and what changed in the new TOEFL.
Practise this on ScoreFluent
ScoreFluent is an AI English coach for seven exam families. It turns each answer into clear feedback and the next thing to practise. For TOEFL Writing, Build a Sentence is free every day. Writing feedback marks the sentences that need work, and Personalised Tips on the email and the discussion are paid with credits. New accounts get 40 credits, and practice scores are estimates. Start at the TOEFL hub or run a full TOEFL mock.
This page was written by the ScoreFluent team from questions students asked in public. ScoreFluent is an independent practice platform and is not affiliated with, endorsed by or connected to ETS. Practice scores are estimates, not official results.
