Start MET preparation with the free official material. Michigan Language Assessment gives free digital sample tests for all four skills. It also gives study guides and resource packs for Speaking and Writing. This plan shows how to use them in four weeks. It is our advice, not an official programme.

📋

What you are preparing for. 155 minutes in one computer-based sitting: Writing 45 min, Listening 35 min (50 questions), Reading 65 min (50 questions), Speaking 10 min (5 recorded tasks) · each section 0–80 · overall is the average. Source: Michigan's Test Taker Handbook.

Before week one: get your target

Find out what score you need and whether the receiving organisation wants an overall, section minimums or both. Read it through the CEFR cuts (27 A2, 40 B1, 53 B2, 64 C1) in MET scores and CEFR. Then take one official sample under exam conditions to find your starting point.

Week 1: diagnose and learn the format

  • Sit one official sample, all four sections in order, on the clock.
  • Read the Test Taker Handbook for the format and the policies.
  • Rank the four sections from weakest to strongest and give the weakest the most time.

Week 2: Reading and Listening

  • Reading: keep the 20 Part 1 grammar items quick, then practise the three-text sets in Part 3. See MET Reading.
  • Listening: practise forward-only, without rewinding. See MET Listening.
  • Answer every question; nothing is deducted for a wrong one.

Week 3: Writing and Speaking

  • Writing: three short responses and an essay in 45 minutes, marked on five criteria including Mechanics. See MET Writing.
  • Speaking: five tasks, 60 seconds for Tasks 1–3 and 90 for Tasks 4–5, recorded with no examiner. Practise aloud to a timer. See MET Speaking.
  • Use Michigan's Writing and Speaking resource packs to rate your own answers.

Week 4: rehearse the real thing

  • Take a second official sample as one block with no break, in the real section order.
  • Compare it with week one, and spend remaining days on whichever section is still furthest from target.
  • Check delivery rules for your booking: test centre or not, ID requirements and timing.
