IELTS delivery changed in 2026, and test takers have been asking what that means for them. The questions below come from YouTube comments, Reddit threads, app-store reviews and Quora threads we read in October 2026; wording lightly edited for clarity. We quote IDP where we can and say so when we cannot confirm something.

📌

Key facts

  • IDP, in its "IELTS test delivery updates" page (read October 2026): "from mid-2026, we will no longer offer IELTS as a paper-based test".
  • IDP: "Exact timelines will vary by market."
  • IELTS announced the end of paper-based tests on 5 March 2026, per our IELTS Listening guide (checked October 2026).
  • IDP offers Writing on Paper in selected markets. IELTS for UKVI (SELT) is "only available in the fully digital format" (IDP, October 2026).
  • One Skill Retake: one skill, within 60 days of a computer-delivered test, once per test. Not currently offered in the USA (IELTS, October 2026).
  • IDP says existing paper results stay valid for the two-year period.

Did the IELTS test itself change in 2026, or only how it's delivered?

The announced change is about delivery. IDP says that from mid-2026 it will no longer offer IELTS as a paper-based test. We found no official change to the content of the four sections in the sources we read. Check ielts.org and your test centre for the latest on your booking.

Some test takers who have sat the test report no difference. The commenter quoted below finished Listening, Writing and Reading and got 55 likes. We cannot tell which format they sat, so treat it as one report, not a rule.

Another commenter under a March 2026 explainer video says they decided to move their 13 March test (51 likes). Moving is a personal choice. The sources we read do not say the test content changed.

What to do

  • Read the IDP page "IELTS test delivery updates" yourself. It is short and it is the source.
  • Keep practising all four sections. The 0–9 band scale and the four criteria are described on our IELTS scoring page.
  • Ask your test centre which format your booked date uses.

When does paper-based IELTS end in my country?

IDP says paper-based IELTS ends from mid-2026 and that "exact timelines will vary by market". We cannot give you a date for your country, and we will not guess. Ask your local test centre which delivery modes it still offers and which dates are open before you book.

What to ask your test centre

  • Is paper-based IELTS still offered in my city, and until when?
  • Is Writing on Paper available here, and who can book it?
  • Will my booked date be computer-delivered?
  • How soon will results arrive for the format I will sit?

What is "Writing on Paper" and who can choose it?

It is a hybrid option IDP offers in selected markets, in which the Writing section is taken on paper. We could not find a public rule for who is allowed to choose it, so ask your test centre. IDP says it is not available for IELTS for UKVI.

What to know

  • It is offered only in selected markets. Not every test centre has it.
  • If you sit Writing on Paper and later need One Skill Retake for Writing, IDP says that retake must be on paper.
  • If you type faster than you write, or the other way round, find out which format you can book before you choose your date.

Is IELTS for UKVI affected?

Yes. IDP says IELTS for UKVI (SELT) is "only available in the fully digital format". If you need IELTS for a UK visa, plan to sit the computer-delivered version. Writing on Paper is not an option for UKVI. Check the exact requirement with the body asking for your result.

For how English tests are accepted for UK student visas, see our UK student visa English tests guide.

Is computer IELTS easier than paper?

We found no official statement that either format is easier. Both report results on the same 0–9 band scale. What changes is the experience: typing instead of handwriting. Choose the format you can practise for, and practise in that format.

Test takers ask this a lot. In our YouTube sample, around 20 comments ask whether computer or paper IELTS is easier, mostly with few likes. The replies we read praise the computer test for having no bad pens, which is a comfort point, not a scoring one.

Our IELTS Listening guide notes that IELTS lists 10 minutes to transfer answers on the paper-based test. That step belongs to paper, so your Listening time plan will differ by format.

What to do

  • Do at least some Writing practice by typing against the clock if you will sit on a computer.
  • Do at least some Writing practice by hand if you will sit on paper.
  • Take a full timed test in your format before the real date. Our IELTS practice test page has the format.

Is IELTS Writing scored higher on computer than on paper?

We found no source saying so. IELTS says certificated examiners mark Writing against four published criteria, and those criteria do not mention the format. A test taker on r/IELTS says the same: trained human examiners mark Writing. Some find typing easier, and that can change how much you finish.

What to know

  • The criteria are the same: task response or achievement, coherence and cohesion, lexical resource, and grammatical range and accuracy.
  • A Reddit test taker says on paper every second is precious, because erasing mistakes costs time. On a computer you edit by typing.
  • Whichever format you sit, your band comes from your language, not from the format.

Can I copy and paste in computer IELTS?

One YouTube commenter says "Copy - Paste is not available" and calls the opposite claim wrong information (7 likes). We could not confirm the on-screen tools in an official source, so do not plan around shortcuts. Practise typing and editing with the keyboard, then check ielts.org or your test centre.

How to prepare

  • Practise writing and fixing your essay without relying on copy and paste.
  • Plan your essay before you type, so you do not need to move large blocks of text.
  • Ask your test centre which on-screen tools you will have in the Writing section.
  • One r/IELTS reply says computer test takers get paper, pen, pencil and an eraser. That is one test taker's report, so confirm with your centre.

Can I retake Writing on computer if I sat the paper test?

We found no rule that allows it. IELTS One Skill Retake is for computer-delivered tests, and IDP says a retake of a Writing on Paper test must also be on paper. A r/IELTS thread asks this exact question. Ask your test centre what your original format allows before you book.

What to ask

  • Which format was my original test, and does One Skill Retake apply to it?
  • Which format will my retake be in?
  • Will my receiving organisation accept the retake result?

How does One Skill Retake work in 2026?

IELTS One Skill Retake lets you redo one skill within 60 days of a computer-delivered test, once per test, in the same country. It is not currently offered in the USA. IDP says that a retake of a Writing on Paper test must also be on paper.

Availability depends on your test centre, and the organisation receiving your result can still decide whether it accepts a retake. Our PTE vs IELTS comparison sets this beside PTE retakes, and our validity and retakes page lists the sources.

Before you book a retake

  • Check that your original test was computer-delivered, or a Writing on Paper test if you retake Writing.
  • Count the 60 days from your original test date.
  • Confirm that your university or visa programme accepts One Skill Retake results.

Do my old paper results still count?

IDP says existing paper results stay valid for the two-year period. IELTS publishes a two-year window but frames it as a recommendation to organisations that receive results, so each university, employer or visa authority can set its own rule. Confirm the window with the organisation you are applying to.

What to do

  • Find the date on your result and count two years forward.
  • Ask the receiving organisation what age of result it accepts.
  • If a deadline is tight, book your next test early.
