The questions below come from YouTube comments, Reddit threads, app-store reviews and Quora threads we read in October 2026, plus what students ask us. The sample is tiny: 24 YouTube comments on MET videos, about half duplicates, and a few Reddit threads. Treat it as a list of worries, not a trend. Wording is lightly edited for clarity.

Key facts

  • MET takes 155 minutes: Writing 45, Listening 35, Reading 65, Speaking about 10 (Michigan Language Assessment, read October 2026).
  • Each section is scored 0 to 80. The overall is the average. CEFR cuts: 27 A2, 40 B1, 53 B2, 64 C1.
  • There is no pass or fail. The institution that receives your score sets the requirement.
  • Speaking is five recorded tasks with no examiner, rated by certified raters on three criteria, each 0 to 4.
  • You can retake one of Writing, Listening or Reading, if you ask within three days of results. Speaking cannot be retaken alone.
  • At-home MET testing is paused after 30 September 2026.

How hard is the MET compared with IELTS or TOEFL?

There is no honest yes or no. Michigan's February 2025 study links MET scores to IELTS Academic bands, for example IELTS 6.5 to MET 58 to 61. That shows which scores tend to mean the same ability, not which test is easier. We found no official MET to TOEFL conversion. Choose on acceptance and format.

How the formats differ:

  • MET is a fixed 155-minute form. IELTS lists 2 hours 45 minutes. ETS describes the 2026 TOEFL iBT as about two hours, with adaptive Reading and Listening.
  • MET Speaking is recorded, with no examiner. IELTS Speaking is a conversation with an examiner.
  • Reading Part 1 of MET is 20 grammar items. They count towards your Reading score.

What test takers report about cost and prep time, from r/ENGLISH. Each is a single report, not a rule:

  • One test taker wrote that the MET "cost me about $150 CAD, but it may vary by test center". Fees differ by centre and country, so check where you book.
  • Another advised starting prep "at least 4–6 weeks in advance". Your own timeline depends on your starting level.
  • A third described it as less intense than some other tests but still testing your full skill set.

Where can I practise for MET when every platform is built for IELTS and TOEFL?

Michigan publishes free official sample tests and a Speaking Resource Pack. A few third-party sites also offer MET questions. ScoreFluent has MET practice in all four skills, 13 task types, a full mock and four section mocks. Start with Michigan's samples for the real format, then add scored practice.

What students report: one YouTube commenter asked,

Where are the prep platforms for the Michigan English Test, like IELTS/TOEFL have?

Reddit shows the same gap. Threads on r/ENGLISH are titled "MET Exam Mock Test Resources" and "How much is Michigan English Test?". That is evidence that material is scarce, not a count of how much exists. It is a fair question. Our source-based comparison of MET practice platforms lists Michigan's own material and several others. ScoreFluent is one of the options there, so weigh our view accordingly.

A simple order to work in:

  • Take one official sample under exam conditions to find your start point.
  • Practise each section against its own timer.
  • Use scored practice for Writing and Speaking, where you cannot self-mark easily.

The four-week MET plan has the detail.

Is the MET the Michigan English Test or the Manipal entrance exam?

In this guide, MET means the Michigan English Test, a four-skill English proficiency test from Michigan Language Assessment. Many Reddit threads titled MET are about the Manipal entrance test, an Indian engineering entrance exam, so add Michigan to your searches. Check the thread before you trust the advice.

If a thread talks about engineering seats or Indian colleges, it is the other MET. The threads about test centres, 0 to 80 scores or CEFR levels are about ours.

How is MET scored and what does a 64 mean?

Each section is scored 0 to 80 and the overall is the average of the four. A score of 64 to 80 is CEFR level C1. The cuts are 53 for B2, 40 for B1 and 27 for A2, the same in every section. There is no pass or fail, and MET does not report C2.

MET scoreCEFR level
64-80C1
53-63B2
40-52B1
27-39A2
0-26Below A2

How the sections are marked:

  • Listening and Reading are multiple choice, scored by computer. Wrong answers lose nothing.
  • Writing has five criteria, each 0 to 4: Grammatical Accuracy, Vocabulary, Mechanics, Cohesion and Organization, Task Completion.
  • Speaking has three criteria, each 0 to 4: Task Completion, Language Resources, Intelligibility / Delivery.
  • Michigan does not publish a raw-to-scaled table, so any tool that converts a raw count to an exact score is approximating.
  • Writing and Speaking can be rescored once, by different raters, for a fee.

Can MET earn points for an Australian skilled visa?

MET is on the Department of Home Affairs list for tests taken on or after 7 August 2025, at a secure test centre. Your visa subclass sets the English level you need. Our pages do not map MET scores to points, so check the points table on the Home Affairs site.

One commenter asked whether a higher score earns 20 points or whether 10 is the maximum. We cannot answer that from the pages we use, and we will not guess.

What we can say:

  • Remote testing is not accepted for Australian visas.
  • The list includes the four-skill MET and the MET Single Section Retake. Check that a retake result is acceptable for your subclass before you pay for one.
  • Home Affairs sets score requirements by English level, not by test name.

Our Australian visa English tests guide lists the accepted tests and the checks to make before you book.

Is MET accepted for US nursing licensure?

Our MET guide says the US federal government and most state nursing boards accept MET, and about 27 percent of 2025 test takers took it for nursing. Rules differ by state, so check your board. Outside the US, Ahpra does not list MET and the NMC accepts only IELTS Academic and OET.

One commenter said they chose MET for the NCLEX route and a Florida board. That is one report, not a rule.

Points to check:

  • Your state board sets the score. Michigan does not.
  • A visa list is not a registration list. Home Affairs accepts MET for Australian visas, but Ahpra does not list it for nurse registration.
  • Ask the board whether it takes a test-centre sitting only.

Threads on r/NCLEX show that many candidates do not know whether their state requires any English test at all. Find that out first. The nurse registration guide lists what each regulator accepts, and you should read it before you book anything outside the US.

I scored 54 and need 55 for a US nursing board, what now?

A one-point gap is real: MET overall is the plain average of the four section scores, and your board decides whether anything short of its number counts. You can retake one of Writing, Listening or Reading, if you ask within three days of results. A higher score gives an updated report. Speaking can be rescored once. Ask the board which of these it accepts.

What test takers report: one poster on r/ENGLISH wrote,

My overall score is 54, and I need 55 for Virginia RN licensure

The same poster listed Listening 59, Reading 47, Speaking 57 and Writing 55. We cannot check that report, and we do not state any board's requirement. The board name comes from the poster, not from us. The same poster's question about a rescore got no replies on Reddit, and MET's Speaking rescore rule is the one on MET scoring, as listed below.

What our MET pages say

  • Each section is scored 0 to 80 and the overall is the average. Every skill carries equal weight.
  • A single-section retake exists for Writing, Listening or Reading. Ask within three days of getting results, and only if the receiving body accepts it.
  • If the retake score is higher, you get an updated report marked (R). If it is the same or lower, the report does not change.
  • You cannot retake Speaking alone. Writing and Speaking can each be rescored once by different raters, for a fee. The rescore decision is final.
  • Michigan sets no pass mark. Whether 54 is enough is your board's call.

What to do

  • Ask your board for its exact requirement: overall, per section, or both.
  • Ask whether it takes a single-section retake or a rescored result.
  • If you need a rule on timing or fees that is not here, check Michigan's current retake policy before you pay.

How should I structure the five speaking tasks?

Tasks 1 to 3 are 60 seconds each and share one topic. Tasks 4 and 5 are 90 seconds each. Describe the picture in a clear order, tell one specific experience, then give an opinion with two reasons. For Tasks 4 and 5, cover both sides, then state a decision. Keep talking until time ends.

One commenter asked, "Is there a preferred way to present ideas?" We know of no official template. Michigan rates whether you do what the prompt asks, how wide and accurate your language is, and how easy you are to follow. A simple structure helps with all three.

  • Task 1: scene in order. Setting, main action, background, small details.
  • Task 2: one experience. When, who, what happened, how it felt.
  • Task 3: your side first, two reasons, one example.
  • Task 4: real time for both sides, then a one-line judgement.
  • Task 5: speak to the person. Give your decision first, then reasons, then answer one objection.

Nothing is added for unused time. The recording runs for the full time, so extend an answer rather than stopping. See MET Speaking and our five practice prompts.

Is there a speaking prediction file?

No. Nobody outside Michigan Language Assessment has the real MET questions, so a file that claims to predict them cannot be checked. Tasks 1 to 3 also share a picture topic you cannot know in advance. Practise the five task types instead, using Michigan's official samples and your own prompts.

A commenter asked for one. The wish makes sense: Speaking is the section you cannot self-mark. But a prediction file is a bad bet.

  • Task Completion rates whether you did what the prompt asked. A prepared answer to a different prompt scores badly.
  • Tasks 1 to 3 build on one picture. A memorised Task 2 does not fit a picture you have not seen.
  • Time spent on a guessed file is time not spent on the five task types.
  • Any file that claims to be real exam content should make you suspicious.

Better use of the time: record yourself on a timer, listen back, and check the three criteria one at a time.

How long is each section?

MET takes 155 minutes in one sitting. Writing is 45 minutes. Listening is 35 minutes with 50 questions. Reading is 65 minutes with 50 questions. Speaking is about 10 minutes with 5 recorded tasks. Listening and Reading have no negative marking, so answer every question.

SectionTimeFormat
Writing45 minThree short personal questions, then a formal multi-paragraph essay
Listening35 min50 multiple-choice questions
Reading65 min50 multiple-choice questions: 20 grammar items, two single passages of 5 questions, two multi-text sets of 10
Speakingabout 10 min5 recorded tasks

Source: Michigan Language Assessment, read October 2026. Michigan's pages describe Writing as two parts; our MET page counts four questions (three short answers and the essay).

Michigan sets no word limit for the essay. Its curriculum guide notes that stronger essays typically run to at least 250 words. See MET Writing for how to split the 45 minutes.
