PTE Core vs PTE Academic: the questions people ask before booking

PTE Core and PTE Academic share a name and a score scale, but they are different tests with different uses. These answers draw on Pearson, IRCC and Home Affairs pages, plus questions from YouTube comments, Reddit threads and Quora that we read in October 2026. Wording is lightly edited.

Which one does IRCC accept for Canada PR?

PTE Core. IRCC's Express Entry language-testing page lists CELPIP-General, IELTS General Training and PTE Core for English, and says you must take the PTE Core option. Pearson says Core is accepted for all economic immigration programmes that require an IRCC-approved English test. Confirm the current list for your programme before booking.

• IRCC maps each ability to Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) levels. For CLB 7, IRCC lists PTE Core Speaking 68–75, Listening 60–70, Reading 60–68 and Writing 69–78. Each ability is mapped on its own.
• Results must be less than two years old when you complete your profile and again when you submit your application.
• Pearson says PTE Core is only available at test centres.

Compare the three accepted tests in CELPIP-General vs PTE Core for Canada and English tests for Canada Express Entry.

Can I use PTE Academic for Canadian immigration?

No. IRCC's Express Entry page lists PTE Core, not PTE Academic. Pearson says PTE Academic is still the only PTE test suitable for studying in Canada. The names are close, so check the exact product on the booking page before you pay. A PTE Academic result is not the version IRCC names.

• Express Entry, citizenship and the Post-Graduation Work Permit are separate routes. Pearson lists all three for PTE Core. Check the rules for your own route.
• The same warning applies in other directions: IELTS Academic is not accepted for Express Entry either. IRCC specifies IELTS General Training.

Which do I need for a Canadian college or university?

PTE Academic. Pearson says you need PTE Academic instead of PTE Core for university or college admission. Each institution sets its own accepted tests and scores, so confirm on its admissions page first. A study permit follows a different sequence from Express Entry: the institution's requirements and acceptance letter come first.

• Do not reuse the Express Entry test list as an admissions list.
• If you plan to study first and immigrate later, you may need both tests at different times. Check each step on its own official page.

Which one for Australia PR, a 485 visa or nursing registration?

PTE Academic, not Core. Home Affairs lists PTE Academic among nine accepted tests for sittings on or after 7 August 2025, and our Australian visa guide says to book Academic, not Core. Ahpra, which covers nursing registration, also lists PTE Academic. Your visa subclass sets the score you need, so check Home Affairs for yours.

• The 485 visa is one subclass. This page does not state its score, because the subclass and your date of testing decide it.
• Nursing registration is set by the regulator, not the visa. The Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia accepts PTE Academic through Ahpra. The UK's NMC does not list PTE. New Zealand's nursing council says "We do not accept PTE."
• Students on Reddit's r/AusVisa threads ask the same question. The common view there is that PTE is easier than IELTS. That is opinion, so check the official score table.

See English tests for Australian visas and English tests for nursing registration.

Are the question types different?

Yes. Pearson lists 7 Speaking and Writing, 5 Reading and 7 Listening question types for PTE Core. PTE Academic has 22 task types in total. The timings differ too: Pearson lists Core Speaking and Writing at 50–65 minutes, against 76–84 for Academic. Check Pearson's Core sample questions for the exact tasks.

• Pearson also lists Core Reading at 27–37 minutes and Listening at 22–37 minutes. Core is a two-hour test of general English.
• PTE Academic's seven speaking tasks include Summarize Group Discussion and Respond to a Situation, added in August 2025. We have not checked which of these appear in Core, so we do not list them.
• Prep sites claim some Academic tasks are dropped in Core. We could not verify that on Pearson's pages.

Is the score scale the same?

Both report on a 10–90 scale per skill, plus an overall score. But a Core result and an Academic result are separate products with separate score reports, so you cannot carry one into an application that names the other. IRCC maps PTE Core scores to CLB levels by skill, and its tables have no overall-score row.

• Pearson says PTE Core is scored by computer, with no human examiner during the test.
• Pearson says PTE Academic is scored by AI, and some responses are also reviewed by a human expert.
• Read the scale as a ruler for one test, not a conversion between the two.

Is PTE Core easier?

We cannot rank them, and we found no independent evidence that either is easier. Pearson lists a shorter Speaking and Writing part for Core, but that does not show it is easier. The right question is which version your application accepts. Try Pearson's own sample questions for that version before you compare.

• A test taker on Reddit wrote that they found PTE Core much easier than CELPIP because it is computer-scored. Others argue the other way. These are opinions.
• Another test taker on Reddit reports 90 in every section of PTE Core for both spouses. Another reports speaking dropping from 82 to 66 despite 90 in two Pearson mocks. Single reports show nothing about the average.
• Do not choose on difficulty if your route names one version only.

Can I prepare for both at once?

ScoreFluent supports PTE Academic today, with all 22 task types, and does not offer PTE Core practice. We have not verified how closely Core items and scoring match Academic, so we do not call Academic practice Core preparation. The skills overlap, but use Pearson's Core sample questions to learn the format itself.

• If your route is Canadian immigration and you want practice on ScoreFluent, IELTS General Training and CELPIP-General are both accepted by IRCC and both available here.
• If your route is study or Australia, PTE Academic practice is the right version.
• Whichever you choose, start from the official sample questions for the version you will sit.
