CELPIP-General vs PTE Core, for Canada.

For Canadian economic immigration, IRCC accepts PTE Core, not PTE Academic. This page compares CELPIP-General and PTE Core on format, scoring, CLB mapping and test delivery, using the official sources. It does not say which is easier.

Eligibility first

Which PTE test does Canada accept?

IRCC’s Express Entry language-testing page lists three English tests: CELPIP-General, IELTS General Training and PTE Core. For Pearson it says “You must take the PTE Core option.” PTE Academic is not on the list, and for CELPIP IRCC says you must take CELPIP-General.

Pearson describes PTE Core as the PTE test for Canadian permanent residency and citizenship, and says PTE Academic is still the only PTE test suitable for studying in Canada. ScoreFluent offers PTE Academic practice, not PTE Core practice, so PTE Academic practice here is not PTE Core preparation. For the full accepted list and what each route requires, see our Canada Express Entry English tests guide.

Scores and CLB

How do CELPIP and PTE Core scores map to CLB?

The two tests use different scales, so compare them only through the CLB levels in IRCC’s own tables. IRCC maps each ability separately: CELPIP-General levels match CLB levels one for one, and PTE Core scores map by range for each skill. There is no overall-score row.

From the Express Entry tables on IRCC’s language-testing page, checked 16 October 2026. CLB 7 to 10 are from the Federal Skilled Worker Program table, and CLB 5 and 6 from the Canadian Experience Class table, where the PTE Core ranges are the same as on IRCC’s post-graduation work permit page. Programmes award points and set minimums differently, so use IRCC’s table for your programme. For your own CLB level, rely on IRCC’s tables, not this summary. On our CELPIP scoring page, the 1–12 levels are also shown against the CEFR.

What you actually do

How do the tests feel different?

Speaking

Both tests record you with no examiner in the room. CELPIP has eight tasks, each with its own preparation and recording clock, rated by trained raters. PTE Core mixes speaking tasks into one Speaking and Writing section scored by computer. See CELPIP Speaking.

Writing

CELPIP asks for two responses of 150 to 200 words, an email and a survey response. PTE Core’s writing tasks are shorter: a 25-to-50-word summary and an email of up to 120 words. See CELPIP Writing.

Reading and Listening

CELPIP-General has 38 scored questions in each, in parts of everyday and workplace material, with every audio clip played once. PTE Core’s Reading and Listening sections are shorter and use their own question types. See CELPIP Reading and CELPIP Listening.

Timing

How long are results valid for IRCC?

The test owners and IRCC apply different rules. CELPIP’s own pages differ: its results page says a result is valid for 5 years from score-report issue, and its test format page says 2 years. Pearson says a PTE Core score report is valid for 2 years from the test date. For Express Entry, IRCC requires results to be less than 2 years old when you complete your profile and when you submit your permanent-residence application, and it refuses applications with expired results.

So a longer publisher window, if CELPIP’s results page is the current one, does not buy extra time with IRCC. Plan around the date you submit your application, not the day you enter the pool. Our IELTS General Training vs CELPIP-General guide covers retakes and validity for the third accepted test.

How to decide

How do you choose between them?

1. Confirm the programme and its CLB level

IRCC sets the minimum in Canadian Language Benchmarks for each of the four abilities. For the Federal Skilled Worker Program, IRCC lists CLB 7 in all four abilities for the first official language. Other programmes differ, so read yours first.

2. Confirm the exact test version

IRCC names CELPIP-General and PTE Core. Book those versions, not CELPIP-General LS and not PTE Academic. A near-identical name is not the same test.

3. Sit the official free samples

Try the CELPIP-General and PTE Core samples from the test owners. Notice which speaking format you can perform in: replies rated by trained raters, or tasks scored entirely by computer.

4. Check the timeline

Compare dates and centres near you, how soon results arrive, and the two-year window. IRCC needs results less than two years old when you complete your Express Entry profile and again when you submit the application.

A preference for one speaking format tells you what to familiarise yourself with. It does not show which test will give you a higher level. Our free test chooser helps with format fit once you know which versions your programme accepts.

What can you practise here?

ScoreFluent has CELPIP-General practice across Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking, free to start. Results are practice estimates, not official CELPIP levels, and our CELPIP scoring has not been calibrated against official results. ScoreFluent does not offer PTE Core practice; its PTE Academic practice is for the academic test. CELPIP’s own free practice tests are the place to start, and our CELPIP practice test guide lists them.

FAQ

CELPIP vs PTE Core, answered.

Does Canada accept PTE Academic for immigration?

No. IRCC’s Express Entry language-testing page lists PTE Core, not PTE Academic, and says you must take the PTE Core option. Pearson says PTE Academic is still the only PTE test suitable for studying in Canada.

What is the difference between PTE Core and PTE Academic?

Pearson describes PTE Core as a general English test for Canadian permanent residency and citizenship, and PTE Academic as an academic test used for university admission and for visas to Australia and New Zealand. They are separate products with separate score reports.

Which English tests does IRCC accept for Express Entry?

IRCC lists CELPIP-General, IELTS General Training and PTE Core for English. For French it lists TEF Canada and TCF Canada. Confirm the current list for your programme before you book.

How do CELPIP-General levels map to CLB?

IRCC’s tables map each CELPIP-General level to the same CLB level, so CELPIP 7 is CLB 7 in each ability. PTE Core scores map by range for each skill, and IRCC’s tables have no overall-score row.

What PTE Core scores does IRCC list for CLB 7?

IRCC’s tables list Speaking 68–75, Listening 60–70, Reading 60–68 and Writing 69–78 for CLB 7. Each ability is mapped on its own, so check the range for every skill.

How are CELPIP-General and PTE Core scored differently?

CELPIP reports a level from 1 to 12 per skill. Trained raters rate Writing and Speaking and a computer scores Listening and Reading. PTE Core reports 10–90 per skill and Pearson says it is scored by computer, with no human examiner during the test.

Can I take PTE Core or CELPIP-General at home?

Not PTE Core: Pearson says it is only available at test centres. CELPIP’s test-day information describes sitting the test at a test centre, and Home Affairs lists a “CELPIP Online” product among the at-home tests it refuses, so check celpip.ca before you assume any at-home option exists or is accepted.

How long do my CELPIP or PTE Core results stay valid for IRCC?

IRCC requires results to be less than two years old when you complete your Express Entry profile and when you submit your permanent-residence application. That rule applies on top of each test’s own validity period.

Does ScoreFluent offer PTE Core practice?

No. ScoreFluent offers PTE Academic practice and CELPIP-General practice. PTE Academic practice is not PTE Core preparation, and we have not verified how closely the two tests’ items and scoring match.

Is CELPIP-General or PTE Core easier?

ScoreFluent does not rank them. They differ in format, scoring and delivery, so check which version your programme requires and sit each official sample before you decide.
