Which English test should you take for Canada Express Entry?

Three English test versions are currently accepted. The names are similar to academic exams, so check the exact product before comparing formats.

Short answer: for Express Entry, IRCC lists CELPIP-General, IELTS General Training and PTE Core. This page does not generalise that list to every Canadian immigration, citizenship or study route. Start with the official Express Entry language-test page.

The exact Express Entry test versions

Canadian English

CELPIP-General

Use the four-skill General test. CELPIP-General LS is not the version named for Express Entry.

IELTS

IELTS General Training

Do not substitute IELTS Academic. IRCC also says IELTS One Skill Retake is not accepted for Express Entry.

Pearson

PTE Core

Do not substitute PTE Academic. The Core and Academic tests target different purposes and task sets.

IRCC converts each test's results to Canadian Language Benchmark levels. Use its official conversion tool for your programme rather than comparing the raw numbers across exam scales.

Express Entry rules do not answer every Canada question

Express Entry includes the Federal Skilled Worker Program, Federal Skilled Trades Program and Canadian Experience Class. The programme determines the language threshold and how your results affect eligibility or ranking.

A study permit follows a different sequence: you first meet the designated learning institution's admission and language requirements, receive a letter of acceptance, and then prepare the permit application. Do not reuse this Express Entry test list as a university admissions list.

IRCC requires results to be less than two years old both when you complete the Express Entry profile and when you submit the permanent-residence application. Plan around the later date, not only the day you enter the pool.

How to choose between the three accepted tests

  1. Confirm your Express Entry programme. Record its required Canadian Language Benchmark level and whether you need English, French or both.
  2. Compare exact official samples. Try CELPIP-General, IELTS General Training and PTE Core tasks rather than samples from their academic namesakes.
  3. Check the whole timeline. Compare available dates, local centres, result timing and the two-year validity window against your likely invitation and application dates.
  4. Keep section performance visible. IRCC maps listening, reading, writing and speaking separately; one strong overall impression cannot repair a weak required ability.
