C1 Advanced vs PTE Academic, side by side.

What actually differs

Six differences to weigh.

A partner and examiners, or a microphone

C1 Advanced Speaking is a conversation with another candidate in front of two examiners, and part of the mark is for how you interact. PTE records your spoken responses through a microphone and scores them with AI, plus human review of some responses. We do not rank which is easier, because that depends on how you speak under each condition.

Four papers or one sitting

C1 Advanced is four papers totalling about 3 hours 55 minutes. PTE Academic is one computer sitting that Pearson describes as 2 hours, and its three part timings add up to 130–153 minutes.

Listening twice or once

Every C1 Advanced recording is heard twice, so you can confirm an answer. Every PTE Academic clip is heard once, so you must commit as you listen.

A result that does not expire, or lasts two years

Cambridge says a certificate does not expire, but organisations decide how long they accept it. Pearson says a score report is valid for two years. Either way, ask the organisation receiving your result what it will accept.

Different scales, no official conversion

Cambridge reports 142–210, with 180–199 earning a C1 certificate. Pearson reports 10–90. We found no score-to-score conversion between the two on either body’s pages, so treat any table online as unofficial.

Time to results

PTE Academic results usually arrive within two days. C1 Advanced digital results take 5–10 working days and paper results normally 4–6 weeks, so a close deadline may decide it.

None of these makes one test better. They decide which one fits your requirement, your deadline and how you perform under each condition.

Recognition

Which governments list each test?

Recognition depends on the visa, the test version, the test date and sometimes the delivery. These are the government lists we checked on 15 and 16 October 2026:

WhereC1 AdvancedPTE AcademicSource
UK visasNot on the gov.uk list of approved Secure English Language TestsPTE Academic UKVI is on the listgov.uk SELT list

New Zealand skilled residenceNot listed. The only Cambridge tests listed are B2 First and B2 First for SchoolsListedImmigration New Zealand
Canada Express EntryNot listedNot listed. Canada accepts PTE Core, not PTE AcademicIRCC

Universities, employers and professional bodies publish their own lists, so none of this means a test is accepted everywhere. Ask the organisation that receives your result which test, which score and which skill minimums it needs before you book. For Australia, see our Australian visa comparison.

A checkable differentiator

You can practise both here.

ScoreFluent covers seven English exam families in one account, including Cambridge C1 Advanced and PTE Academic. C1 Advanced practice covers Reading and Use of English, Listening, Writing and Speaking, with a full mock test and section mock tests. Results are practice estimates, not official Cambridge or Pearson scores.

Our C1 Speaking estimate is a provisional solo practice estimate, because you cannot practise a real partner alone. Read the C1 Advanced practice test guide and the PTE Academic guide before you commit to a test date.

FAQ

Choosing questions, answered.

Is C1 Advanced easier than PTE Academic?

ScoreFluent does not rank them. They measure English through different formats, and difficulty depends on how you handle a paired conversation, a recorded response, twice-played listening and single-play listening. What you can compare is the format, the scale and the recognition, which this page sets out.

Can I convert a PTE Academic score to a C1 Advanced score?

Not officially. Neither Cambridge nor Pearson publishes a score-to-score conversion on the pages we checked, and a shared CEFR level is a label rather than an equivalence. If a university or visa authority accepts both, use its own published requirement for each test.

Does a C1 Advanced certificate expire?

Cambridge states that its certificate does not expire, though universities, employers and other organisations choose how long they accept results. A PTE Academic score report, by contrast, is valid for two years from the test date.

Which test gives results faster, C1 Advanced or PTE Academic?

PTE Academic, usually. Pearson says results are usually available within two days and can take up to five working days. Cambridge says digital C1 Advanced results arrive in 5–10 working days and paper results normally in 4–6 weeks.

Is PTE Academic accepted for UK visas, and C1 Advanced?

The gov.uk list of approved Secure English Language Tests names PTE Academic UKVI but does not name any Cambridge test. A standard sitting of PTE Academic is not the UKVI version, so book the UKVI test if a visa needs it.

Are both accepted for Australian visas?

Both are named on the Home Affairs list of accepted English tests. The required score depends on your visa, the test date and the skill, so check Home Affairs for your case before you book.

Is C1 Advanced accepted for New Zealand skilled residence visas?

It is not on the list we checked, which names PTE Academic and, from Cambridge, only B2 First and B2 First for Schools. Immigration New Zealand updates the list, so confirm your visa type with them.

Does Canada accept PTE Academic or C1 Advanced?

Not for Express Entry on the page we checked. IRCC lists PTE Core, not PTE Academic, and does not list Cambridge C1 Advanced.

Is C1 Advanced Speaking with a person and PTE speaking with a computer?

Yes. C1 Advanced Speaking is face to face with another candidate and two examiners. PTE Academic speaking is recorded through a microphone, with AI scoring and human expert review of some responses.

Can I practise both C1 Advanced and PTE Academic on ScoreFluent?

Yes, with one account. C1 Advanced practice covers all four papers with a full mock test and section mock tests, and PTE Academic is live too. Our scores are practice estimates, and our C1 Speaking estimate is a provisional solo estimate.
