Which English test for study, migration or work

Three decision trees, each following a different starting question — your goal, your preferred speaking format, or your strongest skill — down to exactly one named exam.

Compare tests for Australian visas →

Purpose and destination come first

A test's speaking style, listening conditions or writing tasks are only worth comparing once you know which tests your university, employer, immigration authority or professional regulator will actually accept for your purpose. A strong performance on a test nobody recognises for that purpose does not help you. Each tree below starts from your goal, then narrows using speaking format or your strongest skill, and every path ends in exactly one named exam — though speaking format or skill strength is only a reasonable tie-breaker once acceptance has already narrowed the field.

Acceptance rules are dated and change. The Australian visa detail in the first tree reflects rules for sittings on or after 7 August 2025; Canadian permanent residence and citizenship pathways accept CELPIP-General and IELTS General Training among these eight, subject to the current IRCC list for your programme; university and college admissions and most professional regulators publish their own lists and section minimums. Healthcare professionals should also check whether their regulator accepts OET, which sits outside this eight-profile comparison entirely. Confirm the current rules of the recognising body — not this guide — immediately before booking. Once your goal has narrowed the field, use the formats guide and the strengths chooser on the hub to break any remaining tie between accepted options, then try an official sample before you book.

Which speaking format suits you best?

Every one of the eight profiles asks you to speak, but the format of that speaking task differs sharply. Follow the branch that matches how you would rather perform.

Which of these eight tests are accepted for Australian visas?
