PTE Writing, task by task.
Two written tasks sit in the Speaking and Writing part: Summarize Written Text and Write Essay. Two more tasks in the Listening part, Summarize Spoken Text and Write from Dictation, also count towards your Writing score. Here are the limits, what feeds the score, and where to find a guide for each.
Which tasks make up PTE Writing?
| Task | What you do | Questions | Time and limits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Summarize Written Text | Summarise a text of up to 300 words in one sentence | 2 | 10 min each; one sentence of 5–75 words |
| Write Essay | Write an essay in response to a prompt of 2–3 sentences | 1 | 20 min; 200–300 words |
| Summarize Spoken Text | Listen to a 60–90 second recording, then write a summary | 1 | 10 min; 50–70 words |
| Write from Dictation | Type a sentence of 3–5 seconds, heard once | 3–4 | Heard once; no time limit listed |
The first two tasks are typed in the Speaking and Writing part, which Pearson lists at about 76 to 84 minutes in total. The last two sit in the Listening part, listed at 31 to 39 minutes. Question counts are Pearson’s published ranges and vary by test.
What feeds your Writing score?
| Task | Skills Pearson credits | Part of the test |
|---|---|---|
| Summarize Written Text | Reading and Writing | Speaking and Writing |
| Write Essay | Writing | Speaking and Writing |
| Summarize Spoken Text | Listening and Writing | Listening |
| Write from Dictation | Listening and Writing | Listening |
So your Writing score is built from four tasks across two parts, not from the essay alone. Pearson’s pages disagree on whether Listening Fill in the Blanks also counts towards Writing: the format page says it does and the score guide table lists it under Listening, so we have left it out of the table.
How is PTE Writing scored?
Write Essay is scored on seven traits in Pearson’s score guide: Content; Form; Development, Structure and Coherence; Grammar; General Linguistic Range; Vocabulary Range; and Spelling. Summarize Written Text is scored on Content, Form, Grammar and Vocabulary.
Form is a length check. The score guide gives full Form credit for an essay of 200 to 300 words, partial credit for 120 to 199 or 301 to 380 words, and 0 outside that range. A 0 for Form or for Content means no score points for the response, so length and relevance are gates before any other trait counts. A Summarize Written Text answer must be one sentence of 5 to 75 words.
Pearson says AI scores every response. A human expert also reviews Content on Summarize Written Text, Write Essay and Summarize Spoken Text. On Write Essay the expert review also covers Development, Structure and Coherence and General Linguistic Range.
