Two exams neither marked entirely by hand — but not identical either. Here is how the redesigned TOEFL and PTE Academic actually differ, from a team running practice for both.
Four differences that matter.
Two machine-scored exams, different split
PTE Academic is fully AI-scored end to end — no human examiner touches any response. TOEFL’s 2026 redesign is mostly rule-based (Reading, Listening and Build a Sentence are deterministic, no model involved) with four open-response tasks scored by ETS’s own AI engines and human raters stepping in on a QA sample. Neither exam is human-marked in the way IELTS or LanguageCert are.
Different score scales
PTE Academic reports 10–90. TOEFL now reports band 1–6 in 0.5 steps, per section and overall, with a legacy 0–120 figure dual-reported only until January 2028. There is no official concordance between the two scales.
Adaptivity is new to TOEFL, not to PTE
TOEFL Reading and Listening became two-stage adaptive with the 2026 redesign — a router section routes you to a Lower or Upper module. PTE Academic does not adapt within a section the same way.
No integrated tasks on either exam’s newest design
TOEFL removed every integrated task in 2026 — every task is now single-modality. PTE Academic has never used TOEFL-style integrated read-listen-write tasks either, though its own task types combine skills in other ways (for example, Summarize Written Text still asks you to read then write).

Is TOEFL or PTE more heavily AI-scored?
PTE Academic is fully AI-scored with no human examiner in the loop at all. TOEFL is mostly rule-based (Reading, Listening, Build a Sentence) with four open-response tasks scored by ETS’s own AI engines, backstopped by human raters on a QA sample — so PTE has no human check anywhere, while TOEFL has a QA layer on its AI-scored tasks specifically.
How do the TOEFL and PTE score scales compare?
TOEFL reports band 1–6 in 0.5 steps; PTE reports 10–90. There is no official concordance published between the two, so don’t rely on an unofficial conversion table for either.
Is the 2026 TOEFL redesign now more like PTE?
In one respect, yes — both exams now avoid TOEFL-style cross-pillar integrated tasks (TOEFL removed them in 2026; PTE never used that specific format). But the two remain structurally different: TOEFL’s Reading and Listening are newly adaptive, and its scoring mixes deterministic rules with AI on specific tasks, while PTE is uniformly AI-scored throughout.
