How CELPIP-General is scored.
A level from 1 to 12 for each of the four skills, linked to the Canadian Language Benchmarks and the CEFR. Listening and Reading are computer-rated; Writing and Speaking are rated by trained raters on four published dimensions each.
One level per skill, aligned to CLB and CEFR.
Your report gives a level for each skill, and 0 or 1 is used where there is insufficient evidence to rate. CELPIP’s level descriptors are tracked to the Canadian Language Benchmarks; the table follows CELPIP’s own guidebook.
| CELPIP level | CLB level | CEFR | Descriptor |
|---|---|---|---|
| 12 | 12 | C2 | Expert proficiency in high-stakes social, educational or workplace contexts |
| 11 | 11 | C1 | Advanced proficiency in high-stakes contexts |
| 10 | 10 | C1 | Highly effective proficiency in some high-stakes contexts |
| 9 | 9 | B2 | Effective proficiency in some high-stakes contexts |
| 8 | 8 | B2 | Good proficiency in more demanding contexts |
| 7 | 7 | B2 | Adequate proficiency in somewhat demanding contexts |
| 6 | 6 | B1 | Developing proficiency in everyday contexts |
| 5 | 5 | B1 | Acquiring proficiency in everyday contexts |
| 4 | 4 | A2 | Adequate proficiency for daily life activities |
| 3 | 3 | A2 | Some proficiency in limited contexts |
| 2 | 1, 2 | A1 | Limited ability in contexts related to immediate needs |
The overall level, where one is quoted, is the mean of the four component levels rounded to the nearest whole level, according to CELPIP’s January 2026 score guidance. Because receiving organisations often set a minimum for each skill, keep four separate targets rather than treating an average as sufficient.
Two sections by computer, two by trained raters.
| Section | Rated by | What is rated |
|---|---|---|
| Listening | Computer-rated | Key-scored questions, statistically equated |
| Reading | Computer-rated | Key-scored questions, statistically equated |
| Writing | Trained raters | Four dimensions: Content/Coherence, Vocabulary, Readability, Task Fulfillment |
| Speaking | Trained raters | Four dimensions: Content/Coherence, Vocabulary, Listenability, Task Fulfillment |
CELPIP publishes approximate raw-count ranges for Listening and Reading, but they overlap from level to level and forms are statistically equated, so no exact raw-to-level conversion exists. Some items in both sections are unscored development questions you cannot identify, so answer every one.
The four dimensions, and what raters ask.
Content/Coherence
Both skills. How well are the ideas organised and developed? Raters look at the number and quality of ideas, how they are organised, and the examples and supporting details.
Vocabulary
Both skills. What is the range of your vocabulary, and can you use it naturally? Word choice, suitable words and phrases, range, and precision and accuracy.
Readability (Writing)
How easy is the response to read and understand? Format and paragraphing, connectors and transitions, grammar and sentence structure, and spelling and punctuation.
Listenability (Speaking)
How easy is the response to listen to and understand? Rhythm, pronunciation and intonation; pauses, interjections and self-correction; grammar and sentence structure; and variety of sentence structure.
Task Fulfillment
Both skills. Did you follow the instructions, in an appropriate tone? Relevance, completeness and tone, plus word count in Writing and length in Speaking. An email that explains a problem but never proposes the requested solution is incomplete, however polished.
The dimensions and guiding questions above come from CELPIP’s published performance standards. How the dimension ratings combine into a level is not published in reproducible detail, so treat any practice level as an estimate, ours included.
What counts as a good level.
The receiving organisation decides. A Canadian CLB target is not automatically the target for an Australian application: for Australia’s Competent English level, CELPIP’s guidebook lists at least CELPIP 7 for each component, and the rules differ by visa and test date. Confirm the required level, every section minimum and the delivery mode with the body that will receive your result. The Australian visa comparison puts CELPIP alongside the other accepted tests.

Exam details change — the test provider revises its documents during the year. If a decision hangs on a detail here, check it against the official pages above first; they outrank this page.

CELPIP scoring questions, answered.
How is CELPIP-General scored?
You get a level for each of the four skills on a 1–12 scale. Listening and Reading are computer-rated; Writing and Speaking are rated by trained raters against published performance standards. The report shows each skill separately, so there is no single score to hide a weak skill behind.
Is there an overall CELPIP score?
CELPIP’s January 2026 score guidance defines the overall as the mean of the four component levels, rounded to the nearest whole level. Recognising bodies often set a minimum for each skill instead, so check the requirement against all four levels, not the average.
What CLB and CEFR levels do CELPIP levels match?
CELPIP’s level descriptors are tracked to the Canadian Language Benchmarks, and CELPIP levels 3 to 12 sit at the matching CLB level. On the CEFR, 7 to 9 is B2, 10 and 11 are C1 and 12 is C2, as the table above shows.
How are CELPIP Writing and Speaking rated?
Both are rated on four dimensions. Writing: Content/Coherence, Vocabulary, Readability and Task Fulfillment. Speaking: Content/Coherence, Vocabulary, Listenability and Task Fulfillment. Relevance, completeness and tone count under Task Fulfillment, so a polished answer that skips part of the task loses credit.
Can I convert my raw Listening or Reading score into a CELPIP level?
Not exactly. CELPIP publishes approximate raw-count ranges that overlap from one level to the next, and forms are statistically equated, so no exact raw-to-level rule exists. Any tool that claims to convert a raw count to an exact level is approximating, including ScoreFluent.
What CELPIP level do I need?
It depends on who receives the result: an immigration programme, a university or an employer. For Australia’s Competent English level, the CELPIP guidebook lists at least CELPIP 7 for each component, but visa rules differ by programme and date, so confirm with Home Affairs before you book.
How long do CELPIP results take?
CELPIP’s results page gives 2–4 business days. Check it for the current wording before you plan around a deadline.
