ScoreFluentIn short
- Magoosh's TOEFL pages are marked as updated for the 2026 format. It says it licenses its questions from ETS, which is a vendor claim.
- ScoreFluent uses its own questions and covers seven exam families. Our TOEFL and IELTS practice is newer than Magoosh's.
- Magoosh sells one or six months of access with a score guarantee. ScoreFluent credits never expire and there is no guarantee.
- You can use both.
Magoosh is a self-study platform with courses for several tests. This comparison covers its TOEFL and IELTS products only. It is written by the ScoreFluent team. We describe Magoosh from its own pages, label its figures as its claims, and say where it is the better fit.
Is Magoosh's TOEFL prep updated for the 2026 format?
On 16 October 2026, yes on its own pages. Magoosh's TOEFL plans page marks both Premium plans "Updated for the 2026 TOEFL". Its 2026 changes page says the TOEFL iBT "has a brand-new format as of January 21, 2026" and describes the new sections. Its homepage FAQ says its content is "fully updated for the new test format". Its blog has guides to new tasks such as Build a Sentence and Write an Email.
The table puts Magoosh's wording and ETS's wording side by side on three points. We quote both and leave the comparison to you.
| Point | Magoosh's 2026 changes page | ETS's published pages |
|---|---|---|
| Test length | "The new TOEFL takes about 1.5 hours (down from 2 hours)" | "Test time does not include directions. Please allow approximately two hours to complete the test." (ETS content page) |
| Adaptivity | "These sections adapt based on how you perform on each section, not each question. Do well on one section, and the next one gets harder." | "...both the Reading and Listening sections are designed as two-stage adaptive tests. The TOEFL Writing and Speaking sections are linear..." (ETS blueprint, note 5) |
| Score scales | A 1-6 band score, and "a familiar 0-120 score for comparison" | Four section scores and an overall score on the 1-6 scale. "For a two-year transition period after January 2026" a comparable overall score on the 0-120 scale. (ETS content page) |
For ScoreFluent, our new TOEFL 2026 guide covers the format with ETS sources, and our TOEFL task guides cover each of the 12 tasks. ScoreFluent is not affiliated with ETS. Checked 16 October 2026.
What does Magoosh offer for TOEFL and IELTS?
Magoosh's TOEFL plans and IELTS plans list the same prices and different contents. The counts and feature names in the table are Magoosh's own claims and listings, quoted from its plans pages:
| TOEFL | IELTS | |
|---|---|---|
| Price (USD) | $109 for 1 month, $129 for 6 months | $109 for 1 month, $129 for 6 months |
| Practice tests | "Up to 10 full-length, official practice tests" | "Up to 10 full-length mock tests" |
| Questions | "Over 2000 practice questions" | "850 test-like practice questions with explanation videos" |
| Video lessons | "100+ video lessons" | "Over 120 helpful video lessons" |
| Feedback | "Official TOEFL writing and speaking grading by ETS" | "Unlimited AI Speaking Grading" and "Unlimited AI Writing Grading" |
| Guarantee | "+4 point score guarantee" | "Target Band Score Guarantee" |
Both also list a tutor chat, mobile apps for lessons and flashcards, a study-schedule or analytics view, and a tool that estimates your score range. Magoosh's homepages state "Purchased by 75,000+ TOEFL students" and "Purchased by 40,000+ IELTS students". Those are Magoosh's figures and we did not verify them. The TOEFL plan also includes a voucher for ETS registration fees, which its FAQ says saves $40 in the US. Checked 16 October 2026.
Does Magoosh use official ETS questions, and does ScoreFluent?
Magoosh's TOEFL homepage says its course includes "over 1,300 TOEFL practice questions used under license from ETS" and that writing and speaking are scored by ETS. Its plans page lists "Over 2000 practice questions" for the Premium plans. We could not verify the licence or the ETS grading with ETS. Treat them as Magoosh's claims.
For IELTS, Magoosh says each of its questions "is created by an IELTS expert to mimic the actual exam". That is also its own description.
ScoreFluent's TOEFL and IELTS items are our own. They are not ETS or IELTS questions, and our scores are practice estimates, not official results. If authentic licensed items are your main criterion, Magoosh states that it has them. For free official ETS practice, see our roundup of TOEFL practice platforms. Checked 16 October 2026.
How does feedback on speaking and writing compare?
TOEFL. Magoosh says its writing and speaking grading is by ETS, with an AI tutor for explanations. On ScoreFluent, Reading, Listening and Build a Sentence are marked by answer key. The four open-response tasks (Write an Email, Write for an Academic Discussion, Listen and Repeat and Take an Interview) are AI-scored. Results are shown as band ranges, never one number, and our scoring guide explains why. The adaptive mock test routes Reading and Listening through a router and a Lower or Upper module. ETS does not publish its cut score, so our split point is our own estimate. See how TOEFL scoring works and the TOEFL mock test.
IELTS. Magoosh's IELTS plans list unlimited AI speaking and writing grading, and its homepage says the AI grades your essay "like a real IELTS rater". ScoreFluent scores each IELTS writing task against the four published criteria, with feedback on the sentences that need work. Our IELTS speaking estimate is provisional, because the grader has not yet been calibrated against examiner-marked recordings, so read the band as a rough pointer. See how IELTS scoring works and our IELTS guide.
On speaking tasks that support it, ScoreFluent also lets you tap a word to see scores for its sounds and replay that word from your own recording. That is not available on every word. AI tutor Flo uses your practice history to suggest what to practise next. Checked 16 October 2026.
How does pricing compare?
Magoosh sells time-limited access for a one-time price. Its score guarantee page says "There is no monthly charge. Pay once." A 7-day free trial and a 7-day refund are on its plans pages. Prices were shown in USD, and a promotional code was running when we looked.
ScoreFluent is priced by use. Reading and listening practice is free with a daily limit. Speaking and writing answers can get an examiner report in credits, and most reports cost 8 credits (an essay costs 10). A full mock test costs 40 credits. New accounts get 40 free credits, packs start at $7.99 for 100 credits, credits never expire and there is no subscription. See the pricing page.
For one month of intensive study, Magoosh's flat price may suit you. If you practise a little at a time, or across more than one exam, paying per answer with no expiry may suit you. Checked 16 October 2026.
What do the score guarantees say?
Magoosh's TOEFL guarantee promises a full refund if your total does not rise by at least 4 points on the 0-120 scale. You need a previous TOEFL score under two years old, and you email that report when you sign up. Without a previous score you are not eligible, but the 7-day money-back guarantee still applies. It recommends watching all lessons and completing all questions.
The page says the 4 points apply to the 0-120 score, whether you compare an old score with a new one or two new ones. ETS's content page describes the 0-120 figure as a comparable overall score for a two-year transition period after January 2026.
Magoosh's IELTS guarantee promises a refund if you do not reach your target band, provided you meet conditions such as telling Magoosh your target, watching all lesson videos, completing two mock tests and all questions, using the AI grading and following a schedule. You then send your official score report.
ScoreFluent has no score guarantee. If scoring fails, your credits are refunded automatically. Checked 16 October 2026.
