🎯

In short

  • The TOEFL iBT changed on 21 January 2026, so the first question for any prep platform is which format it teaches.
  • ETS's PDF practice tests, Magoosh, TST Prep and OpenExamPrep say they cover the 2026 format. MockMaster's and GlobalExam's TOEFL pages describe a 0 to 120 score or sections scored out of 30, while ETS's current content page lists twelve tasks and a 1 to 6 scale.
  • ETS's own practice is free to start. Magoosh and TST Prep sell paid courses and publish their own counts, which are vendor claims.
  • ScoreFluent covers all 12 new task types and shows band ranges. We are new, so compare the current bank and mock counts on each provider's official site. Our items are not ETS questions.

The January 2026 redesign changed the task list and the score scale. This page checks what each provider says today about the new format, and dates the answer.

ScoreFluent wrote this page, and we are one of the options compared, so treat our judgements as the view of one provider. ScoreFluent is not affiliated with ETS. Every fact about another provider links to that provider's own page and was checked on 15 or 16 October 2026. Figures a provider states about itself, such as question counts and scoring claims, are labelled as vendor claims. We read public pages. We did not buy or test any rival's paid tier.

How did we compare TOEFL practice platforms?

  • 2026 format status. What the provider's own page says about the January 2026 redesign. This is the key criterion.
  • Where the items come from. ETS questions, or the provider's own.
  • Speaking and Writing feedback. What the page says produces the score, and whether it is called an estimate.
  • Access terms. Free, credits, or a plan that expires on a clock.
  • Published volume. Vendor claims, labelled.

What changed in the January 2026 TOEFL iBT?

ETS's TOEFL iBT content page lists twelve task types in four sections. Reading has Complete the Words, Read in Daily Life and Read an Academic Passage. Listening has Listen and Choose a Response, Listen to a Conversation, Listen to an Announcement and Listen to an Academic Talk. Writing has Build a Sentence, Write an Email and Write for an Academic Discussion. Speaking has Listen and Repeat and Take an Interview. The page lists 50, 47, 12 and 11 items for the four sections, says to allow approximately two hours, and notes that the test adapts. It reports four section scores and an overall score on a 1 to 6 scale, with a comparable overall score on the 0 to 120 scale during a two-year transition after January 2026.

Our new TOEFL 2026 guide and TOEFL task type guides cover each task. Checked 15 and 16 October 2026.

What does each TOEFL practice provider say about the 2026 format?

This table records what each provider's own pages said on 15 and 16 October 2026.

What does ETS's own TOEFL prep include?

ETS's prepare page lists a free Interactive Sample, free Full-Length Practice Tests 1 and 2, and a free 8-week TOEFL iBT Test Prep Planner. The PDF versions of the practice tests (Test 1 and Test 2) say they align with TOEFL iBT tests from 21 January 2026. They also say they are not exact replicas, because directions and questions were adapted for paper.

TOEFL TestReady is ETS's prep portal. Its page lists a free account, a free full-length practice test with "AI-powered automated scoring" and feedback for all four sections, a free daily activity and a free study plan. It lists paid TPO mock tests, a prep course, books and value packs. The page shows no prices. We found no statement on it about which TOEFL format its content follows, so we do not claim one.

ETS's announcement of Official TOEFL Test Prep with Study.com, dated 20 November 2025, says the program was "designed with and approved by TOEFL for the enhanced test". It describes three- or six-month subscriptions with adaptive practice and AI tutoring, and updated task types such as sentence building, email writing and interview-style speaking. It states no price. Study.com's own pages would not load for us, so we say nothing about its current price or contents.

Concession. ETS writes the real test. Its free practice tests are the most authentic items available, and ScoreFluent's items are written by us. The limit is that free ETS practice gives limited feedback on your own Speaking and Writing, which is where paid options compete.

What does Magoosh offer for the 2026 TOEFL?

Magoosh's plans page lists Premium at $109 for one month or $129 for six months. Both plans are marked "Updated for the 2026 TOEFL". They list "Up to 10 full-length, official practice tests", "100+ video lessons" and "Over 2000 practice questions". Its homepage says "over 1,300 TOEFL practice questions used under license from ETS", an AI tutor, and "Official TOEFL writing and speaking grading by ETS". The Magoosh blog has guides to the new tasks, such as Build a Sentence.

Vendor claims. The practice-test, video-lesson and question counts, the licensing statement and the ETS grading statement are Magoosh's own claims, and we could not verify them with ETS. Its plans page lists "Over 2000 practice questions", and its homepage says "over 1,300 TOEFL practice questions used under license from ETS".

Guarantee. The plans page lists a "+4 point score guarantee". Magoosh's score guarantee page says the four points apply to the 0 to 120 score, whether you compare an old TOEFL score with a new one or two new ones, and that you need a previous TOEFL score less than two years old. ETS's content page reports section and overall scores on a 1 to 6 scale, with a comparable overall score on the 0 to 120 scale for a two-year transition period after January 2026.

Concession. If you want volume and licensed ETS items in one paid course, Magoosh states both (see the vendor claims above). We are new, so compare the current bank and mock counts on each provider's official site.

What does TST Prep offer for the 2026 TOEFL?

TST Prep's store says "All Courses & Lessons purchased for the TOEFL iBT come with One-Year Access. No Subscription Required." Its Emergency Course page lists a Basic plan at $37 with two complete practice tests and a Premium plan at $97 with six, and calls the course "for the 2026 TOEFL Test". Its Score Builder Program page lists $197, "10x Complete Practice Tests" and "Speaking and Writing Self-Grading Rubrics", and its store listing shows the program with "20x Complete Practice Tests". The store lists personalised Speaking or Writing feedback under a private-lessons plan from $397. TST Prep's homepage lists guides such as "Take an Interview: Guide to TOEFL Speaking Task 2 (2026)".

Vendor figures. The prices and practice-test counts above are TST Prep's own listings. Confirm current counts and prices at checkout.

Consider TST Prep if you want a one-year course from a teacher-led provider and prefer to grade yourself or book lessons.

What do MockMaster and GlobalExam describe for TOEFL?

This section quotes what their TOEFL pages describe on the dates we checked. ETS's content page lists twelve task types in four sections and reports scores on a 1 to 6 scale, so you can compare.

  • MockMaster. Its TOEFL page says "Score 0–120" and "4 Integrated Skills", and lists Writing as "Integrated + Academic Discussion" and Speaking as "1 independent + 3 integrated" tasks. It does not name the 2026 tasks. Its homepage lists "TOEFL iBT USA · University · Coming soon" in a product menu, and its pricing page lists 500 TOEFL iBT mock tests (a vendor claim) at A$29 for 30 days or A$49 for 60 days. The sister One Australia Group page also lists integrated tasks.
  • GlobalExam. Its TOEFL iBT page says each of the four parts is scored out of 30 and describes a six-exercise Speaking section and two Writing exercises. We say nothing about its price.

Compare each description with ETS's content page, linked above.

What does OpenExamPrep offer for TOEFL?

OpenExamPrep's TOEFL iBT page offers "154+" free practice questions (a vendor figure) with no registration and labels itself "Independent prep · Not endorsed". Its key-facts block describes the updated format as adaptive and about two hours, and gives the 1 to 6 scale from 21 January 2026. The sample questions shown are multiple choice, including a Complete the Words item. It does not describe scored Speaking or Writing practice. Its related-pages list shows TOEFL iBT Speaking and Writing question sets of 100 questions each, and we did not see how they are scored.

Consider it if you want free reading-style checks alongside a platform that scores open-response tasks.

What does ScoreFluent offer for the 2026 TOEFL?

  • All 12 task types. Every task of the 2026 format is practicable. See the TOEFL task guides, including Take an Interview and Listen and Choose a Response.
  • How it is scored. Reading, Listening and Build a Sentence are marked by answer key. The four open-response tasks (Write an Email, Write for an Academic Discussion, Listen and Repeat and Take an Interview) are AI-scored. Results are shown as band ranges, never a single number. See our TOEFL scoring guide.
  • Adaptive mock test. The full mock test routes Reading and Listening through a router and a Lower or Upper module, like ETS's two-stage design. ETS does not publish its cut score, so our split point is our own estimate. See the TOEFL mock test page.
  • Free and paid. Reading, Listening and Build a Sentence are free. Speaking and writing answers get an examiner report bought with credits, and the pricing page lists most at 8 credits and essays at 10, with a full mock test at 40 credits. Credits never expire and there is no subscription. New accounts get 40 free credits.
  • Coaching. AI tutor Flo has TOEFL-specific knowledge of the 2026 format.

Concessions. Our TOEFL practice has been live only since August 2026. We are new, so if practice volume is your main criterion, compare the current bank and mock counts on each provider's official site. Our items are not ETS questions, and our scores are practice estimates, not official TOEFL scores. For authentic items, ETS leads, and Magoosh states that it licenses ETS questions.

How should you combine them?

  1. Take ETS's free practice tests first, to see the real 2026 task formats.
  2. Use one paid platform for volume or for Speaking and Writing feedback, and treat its score as an estimate.
  3. Use free question banks for reading-style checks between sessions.

Our other platform roundups follow the same method: see LanguageCert practice platforms and MET practice platforms. If you are still choosing a test, see TOEFL vs IELTS.

What should you check before paying for TOEFL practice?

  • Does the provider's own page name the 2026 tasks (Build a Sentence, Take an Interview) and the 1 to 6 scale?
  • Are the items ETS questions or the provider's own, and does the page say so?
  • If a guarantee is offered, which score scale does it use? ETS reports a 1 to 6 scale, with a comparable 0 to 120 score during the two-year transition.
  • Do the question counts and prices on the provider's pages match what you see at checkout?
  • Does it publish evidence behind any scoring-accuracy claim? None of the providers we checked did.

You can start practising TOEFL free with 40 free credits.

Is ScoreFluent affiliated with ETS?

No. ScoreFluent is an independent practice platform with no affiliation with or endorsement from ETS. Our results are practice estimates, never official TOEFL scores.
