Which English test should you take for a university in Europe?

Europe is not one admissions market. Start with the country and programme language, then verify the institution's exact evidence and the separate immigration route.

Short answer: there is no EU-wide accepted-test list or score. The EU's Your Europe admissions guidance directs applicants to country and university conditions. English proof is programme-specific.

Choose the country guide that matches your plan

For another country, start with the European Education Area's official country profile, then follow its national admissions portal and the exact programme page.

Check four layers before choosing an exam

  1. Country: identify the national admissions system and whether your prior qualification gives access to higher education.
  2. Institution: check central accepted qualifications, result validity and exemption rules.
  3. Programme: confirm teaching language, exact minimums, section scores and application deadline.
  4. Immigration: separately check the visa or residence permit and whether it asks for language evidence.

An IELTS or TOEFL result can satisfy a programme's language condition while your academic qualification still needs recognition. The reverse can also happen: you may be academically eligible but still need language evidence.

Compare tests only inside the accepted overlap

Live speaking

IELTS and some LanguageCert formats use a live examiner. Confirm the exact product accepted by your programme.

Recorded speaking

TOEFL iBT and PTE Academic record responses. Compare task length, note-taking and integrated-skill demands.

Paired speaking

Cambridge C1 Advanced uses another candidate. It can be useful where the programme explicitly accepts that qualification.

Frequently asked questions

Is there one English test accepted across European universities?

No. Europe has national systems and institution- or programme-level requirements. An English-taught programme can choose its own accepted evidence, scores and exemptions.

Do all European degree programmes require English?

No. The required language follows the programme’s teaching language. A programme taught in German, Dutch, French or another language may require that language instead of, or alongside, English.

Does an English-test result prove academic eligibility?

No. Language evidence is one part of admission. Institutions also assess whether your school-leaving certificate or prior degree meets the academic entry conditions.

Does university admission automatically grant a visa?

No. Admission and immigration are separate processes. Your nationality, country and length of study determine the visa or residence route.
