Which English test should you take for a UK university?

The useful comparison is programme by programme. Accepted tests, score bands, component minimums and online-delivery rules can differ within the same university.

Short answer: open the exact course page before choosing a test. UCAS guidance says the required English level varies between universities and between courses. Then check whether the same evidence will support your Student visa.

Six fields belong in your comparison

Test and version

Write “IELTS Academic” or “PTE Academic”, not only the provider name. Note whether an online or home edition is accepted.

Overall and components

Record the overall requirement plus reading, writing, listening and speaking minimums. You usually need both.

Timing and exemptions

Capture result-age limits, submission deadlines, prior-study exemptions and any pre-sessional route.

Official university pages show the variation

UCL's graduate policy uses five English levels. The programme page tells you which level applies, while the central page maps that level to accepted evidence including IELTS Academic, TOEFL iBT, Cambridge C1 Advanced or C2 Proficiency, PTE Academic and LanguageCert Academic.

Oxford's graduate courses normally identify either a standard or higher English level. Its central policy sets the accepted tests, minimums, waivers and deadline rules, while the individual course page identifies the level required.

These are examples of how to read a policy, not a national acceptance list. Undergraduate, postgraduate and professional courses can make different decisions.

Use one workflow for admission and immigration

  1. Build the programme list. Copy each course's English level and link into one sheet.
  2. Open the central test policy. Translate the named level into exact tests, scores, sections, delivery modes and validity.
  3. Find the overlap. Choose a test accepted by every programme still on your shortlist.
  4. Ask about the CAS. Confirm whether the university will assess your English or whether you need a UKVI-approved SELT.
  5. Prepare against the right format. Use official samples for that exact test, then practise the skills and timing.

Frequently asked questions

Which English test do UK universities accept?

There is no single list for every university or course. UCAS says the required level varies by university and by course. Check the exact programme page and institution-wide policy.

Do I need IELTS for a UK university?

Not always. Depending on the institution and course, accepted evidence may include IELTS, TOEFL, PTE Academic, Cambridge English, LanguageCert, prior education or another approved qualification.

Is a university-accepted test automatically valid for the Student visa?

Not automatically. An eligible degree-level higher education provider can assess English itself, but other cases may need an approved SELT. Ask how your provider will record the evidence for your Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies.

Can my course require more English than the visa level?

Yes. Academic admission and immigration are separate checks. A course can set higher overall or component requirements than the minimum used for the Student route.
