CELPIP Speaking, task by task.
Eight recorded replies in about 15 minutes, each to an on-screen prompt with its own preparation and recording clock. No examiner is in the room, and trained raters rate the recordings afterwards.
Eight tasks, eight clocks.
| Task | Name and guide | What you do | Preparation | Recording |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Giving Advice | Advise a person about a situation they are facing | 30 sec | 90 sec |
| 2 | Talking about a Personal Experience | Talk about an experience linked to a situation you are given | 30 sec | 60 sec |
| 3 | Describing a Scene | Describe a picture so a listener who cannot see it can picture it | 30 sec | 60 sec |
| 4 | Making Predictions | Say what is likely to happen next | 30 sec | 60 sec |
| 5 | Comparing and Persuading | Choose one of two options, then persuade another person that your choice is better than the option they suggest | Choice: 60 sec, no speaking. Then 60 sec | 60 sec |
| 6 | Dealing with a Difficult Situation | Respond to a difficult situation involving other people | 60 sec | 60 sec |
| 7 | Expressing Opinions | Give your opinion on a question, with reasons | 30 sec | 90 sec |
| 8 | Describing an Unusual Situation | Describe an unusual situation | 30 sec | 60 sec |
The task names, the 15-minute section and the clocks come from CELPIP’s published study material, checked 16 October 2026. The one-line descriptions are our summary. Every task has its own guide with timings, a structure, a worked example and practice items. See all of them on the CELPIP task types page.
No interviewer — so speak to the screen.
CELPIP-General is delivered on a computer at a test centre. In Speaking you reply to prompts on the screen, and your recordings are rated by trained raters later. Nobody will nod, prompt you or ask a follow-up, so the skill is filling a fixed window with a structured answer and stopping when the clock does.
That changes how to practise. Use a timer, say your answers aloud, and record them. Reading your notes silently does not rehearse the thing you will be marked on.
Four dimensions, one level.
| Dimension | What it looks at |
|---|---|
| Content/Coherence | The number and quality of your ideas, how they are organised, and the examples and details that support them |
| Vocabulary | The range of your vocabulary and how naturally and precisely you use it |
| Listenability | How easy you are to listen to: rhythm, pronunciation and intonation, pauses and self-correction, grammar and sentence variety |
| Task Fulfillment | Whether you did what the task asked, in an appropriate tone, and used the time you were given |
The dimension names come from CELPIP’s performance standards; the glosses are our paraphrase. CELPIP does not publish how the four ratings combine into a level. The full breakdown is on the CELPIP scoring page.
A plan for each group of tasks.
The task facts are CELPIP’s; the technique below is ours.
Tasks 1, 2 and 7 — ideas, then reasons
Advice, experience and opinion tasks all reward the same shape: a clear opening, two or three points, and a reason or detail for each. Use the preparation time for three keywords, not sentences. Tasks 1 and 7 record for 90 seconds, so keep a spare reason ready for the point that thins out.
Tasks 3 and 4 — the same picture, two jobs
Task 3 asks you to describe, Task 4 to look ahead. In CELPIP’s study material, Task 4 uses the same picture as Task 3, so notice details in Task 3 that suggest what happens next: a person’s expression, an object about to be used, a time of day.
Tasks 5 and 6 — speak to a person
Both tasks have a listener. Task 5 asks you to persuade, so answer the objection you expect. Task 6 asks you to handle a difficulty, so pick your words for the relationship. These are the two tasks with a 60-second preparation window; spend it on tone as well as content.
Task 8 — keep the clock in mind late in the section
By Task 8 you have been speaking for most of the section. Practise the whole run of eight in one sitting at least once, so that your energy and pacing hold up for the last task and not just the first.
Every task — finish the sentence you are on
Each task has its own clock. Ending on a complete sentence sounds better than being cut off mid-word, so aim to start your closing line with about ten seconds left.
All eight tasks, against the real clocks.
ScoreFluent has a practice task type for each of the eight Speaking tasks, free to start. Results are practice estimates on the four published dimensions, not official CELPIP levels. The estimate is provisional: our CELPIP Speaking scoring has not been calibrated against human-rated CELPIP responses, so use it to find what to fix. CELPIP’s own free practice tests are the place to start; our CELPIP practice test guide lists them.

ScoreFluent is an independent practice platform and is not affiliated with, endorsed by or connected to Paragon Testing Enterprises or CELPIP. The format facts here come from CELPIP’s published documents, checked 16 October 2026:

Exam details change — the test provider revises its documents during the year. If a decision hangs on a detail here, check it against the official pages above first; they outrank this page.
