LanguageCert Academic vs TOEFL iBT: which suits university admission?
Two four-skill academic tests, built differently: LanguageCert Academic has a live speaking interview and is reported 0 to 100, while the 2026 TOEFL iBT adapts its Reading and Listening and reports a 1 to 6 scale. This page compares the formats and what the authorities that decide have published.
Checked 16 October 2026 against LanguageCert, ETS and the authorities linked below. ScoreFluent is not affiliated with LanguageCert, PeopleCert or ETS.
Which authorities accept each test?
For university admission there is no single list. Each university decides, often per course. ETS states that it sets no passing or failing score and that each institution sets its own requirements. The table covers authorities that publish lists, which is evidence of scope rather than a ruling on your university.
| Authority | LanguageCert Academic | TOEFL iBT | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Australian visas (Home Affairs, tests on or after 7 August 2025) | On the list of accepted tests | On the list, if you register as "Taking TOEFL for Australia" | Home Affairs: English language |
| UK visas needing a SELT (GOV.UK) | LANGUAGECERT Academic SELT and General SELT are approved | No approved SELT product | GOV.UK: approved SELTs |
| New Zealand non-university tertiary providers (NZQA) | LanguageCert Academic is in the NZQA 2026 rules table, taken at an approved centre | NZQA says the new-format scores cannot be accepted; tests before 21 January 2026 and "the current Australia test" can | NZQA: English language entry requirements; 2026 rules |
| New Zealand skilled residence visas (Immigration NZ) | Not listed on the page we checked | Listed | Immigration NZ: skilled residence visas |
Checked 16 October 2026. Providers make broader claims: ETS says TOEFL iBT is accepted by over 13,500 institutions in more than 160 countries (ETS: understanding scores), and LanguageCert says its qualification is recognised by institutions and authorities in several countries, including Australia, Ireland, New Zealand, the USA and Canada (LanguageCert Academic). Those are the providers’ own statements. Use your university’s page, for example via our guides to UK university English tests and US university English tests.
How do the formats differ?
| LanguageCert Academic | TOEFL iBT (2026 format) | |
|---|---|---|
| Length | 2 hours 34 minutes: Listening about 40, Reading 50, Writing 50, Speaking about 14 | Approximately two hours; ETS says time and items may vary because the test adapts |
| Structure | Four papers: Listening (30 questions, four parts), Reading (30 questions), Writing (two tasks), Speaking (four parts) | 12 task types: three in Reading, four in Listening, three in Writing, two in Speaking |
| Adaptive? | LanguageCert describes a multilevel test that reports B1 to C2, and describes no adaptive routing | Reading and Listening are multistage adaptive |
| Speaking | A recorded, live interview with an interlocutor: questions, two role plays, a read-aloud with follow-up, and a presentation | Listen and Repeat and Take an Interview: 11 items in the section |

We give no results timings for either test: confirm them with the provider.
How are the two marked and reported?
LanguageCert says Listening and Reading are marked automatically by computer, while Writing and Speaking are marked by examiners against criteria scored 0 to 8. The Speaking exam is recorded: the interlocutor awards marks for Task Fulfilment and Communicative Effect in real time, and a second examiner marks the recording on the other criteria. Scores are reported on the 0 to 100 Global Scale, with a CEFR level.
ETS’s Technical Manual says Write an Email, Write for an Academic Discussion and all Speaking tasks are scored with ETS proprietary AI engines as well as human scoring. Human raters step in where the engine lacks confidence, and a random sample is reviewed by certified raters. Scores are reported as a 1 to 6 band in half steps, with an overall that is the average of the four sections rounded to the nearest half band.
Both reports map to CEFR levels, but each provider maps its own scale. A shared CEFR label is not an equivalence between scores, and we found no published conversion between the two tests. For the full breakdown, see how LanguageCert Academic is scored and how TOEFL is scored.
How do you decide between them?
Start with the requirement
If your university or authority names one test, take that one. No conversion table overrides an offer letter. If both are accepted, the choice is about format and logistics, not a ranking.
Speaking: a person or a screen
LanguageCert Academic Speaking is an interview with an interlocutor, so it rewards turn-taking and recovering mid-conversation. TOEFL iBT Speaking is Listen and Repeat and Take an Interview, scored by ETS’s engines. If you freeze when a person looks at you, or when nobody responds, that is worth knowing before you choose.
Listening and Reading shape
Every LanguageCert Academic Listening part is played twice. TOEFL iBT adapts its Reading and Listening to your level as you go. Try an official sample of each under time limits and see which feels natural.
Check the scale and the delivery mode
Ask which TOEFL scale the institution reads, since the 2026 scale differs from the legacy one. Confirm whether an at-home sitting is accepted before you book it; our guide to at-home English tests lists the published rules.

LanguageCert Academic vs TOEFL iBT, answered.
Do universities that accept TOEFL also accept LanguageCert Academic?
Not necessarily. Each university or course sets its own list. ETS says it sets no passing score and that each institution sets its own requirements, and LanguageCert tells you to check your institution’s English requirements. Look up the exact programme page for both tests.
Is LanguageCert Academic easier than TOEFL iBT?
There is no honest yes or no. We found no published concordance between the two, and they differ in shape: LanguageCert Academic has a live speaking interview and twice-played listening, while TOEFL iBT has adaptive Reading and Listening and AI-scored speaking. Choose on acceptance and format fit.
Is there an official conversion between LanguageCert Academic and TOEFL iBT?
We found none. LanguageCert reports 0 to 100 and ETS reports 1 to 6 from January 2026, and each maps to CEFR levels separately. Shared CEFR labels are not a score equivalence, so use the score your institution names for each test.
Which has a live speaking test, LanguageCert Academic or TOEFL iBT?
LanguageCert Academic. Its Speaking test is delivered by an interlocutor and recorded, and examiners award the marks. TOEFL iBT Speaking is Listen and Repeat and Take an Interview, scored by ETS AI engines with human scoring.
Is the 2026 TOEFL iBT adaptive?
Reading and Listening are. ETS’s Technical Manual describes a multistage adaptive design that matches task difficulty to the test taker’s level. LanguageCert describes Academic as a multilevel test and describes no adaptive routing.
Is LanguageCert Academic or TOEFL iBT accepted for a UK visa?
LANGUAGECERT Academic SELT is on the GOV.UK approved list for tests taken in and outside the UK. TOEFL iBT has no approved SELT product. Many UK degree courses let the university assess English itself, so ask the admissions team first.
Are both accepted for Australian visas?
Yes. Home Affairs lists both for tests taken on or after 7 August 2025, at a secure test centre. For TOEFL you must select "Taking TOEFL for Australia" when you register.
Can I take LanguageCert Academic or TOEFL iBT at home?
Yes for both: LanguageCert offers an Online option with live proctors and ETS offers TOEFL iBT Home Edition with a human proctor. Visa authorities and some regulators refuse at-home results, and universities decide for themselves.
Which TOEFL score scale does my requirement use?
Check. TOEFL iBT moved to a 1 to 6 scale on 21 January 2026. NZQA says the new scores do not align with the scores its table requires, and Home Affairs publishes separate requirements for the "Taking TOEFL for Australia" test. Ask the institution which scale it expects.
